Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04
The fish of these shore grounds, due probably to the greater large quantity of food in this article, are
thought to be distinctly superior in quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshore banks.
The cod and the haddock, specifically, of the Gulf of Maine are specifically well conditioned sea food
and are noted for their excellence.
The stats presented in Table 2 show only a fraction of the catch from the Inner Grounds, since they
deal completely with the fares of fishing vessels of 5 net loads and over. There are literally
thousands of the so-called "accredited" or "under-tonned" boats, mostly gill-netters, that take
countless pounds from these oceans annually, principally cod and haddock.
On the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are more than 300 weirs which
furnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures are already chosen
as representing an average season) 77,000,000 weight of herring. About the coast of Massachusetts
there are 50 or more weirs and fish traps, and in the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Reason for Maine
there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore islands, or
perhaps in the open seas, and all these have a rich harvest from all of these waters. , there is the
lobster fishery, more important within the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in
http://www.minn-kota.com/minn-kota/minn-kota-endura/ the states.Then and too
Of these various branches of the fisheries industries couple of statistics are available, however we
may say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" watercraft mentioned
landed 5,324,426 pounds of fish on the port of Boston, mostly of cod and haddock, and this the same
type of craft in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, principally of ground sea
food. We also know that every small town, town, island and hamlet and city together this nearly
4,000 'miles of coast line takes its toll in the sea.
Lukes Rock. This rock lies S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, spherical in shape, and about 1
mile in size. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isrocks and gravel, and mud. This is
mostly a small-motorboat minn kota endura ground, there is however some vessel minn kota endura.
Hake are used here from June to September, comprehensive; cod are present concerning the rocks
the year about. Pollock are within fall and springtime, and haddock from December to Feb, inclusive.
Fishing is as simple as hand and trawl line.
Newfound Terrain. A small rocky spot about 1/4 mile over with an automatic buoy in the center for
guidance into the Bay of Fundy. It is a small-motorboat ground having depths averaging 18 fathoms.
It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. Kinds and seasons are as on Lukes Rock. Fishing
is by trawl and fingers line.
Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 mile in diameter, and 30
fathoms more than a level bottom. Minn Kota Endura is done by hand range and trawl. Cod are
present the year close to, a few haddock in the fall, hake during the summer time but not in the fall,
and pollock in fall and spring.
Handspike Ground. Eight miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly round in form, and ? mile
across. It possesses a bottom of rocks and depths of from 35 to 40 fathoms. seasons and Species are
similar as on Lukes Rock, but mostly cod and pollock are taken on this page by hand and trawl line.
American Egg Rock. This is certainly SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 miles distant, lying in the NE. and
SW. direction, 3 mls long by 1 mile wide. The bottom issharp and irregular, and difficult and has 25
to 30 fathoms. Minn Kota Endura here is mostly manually line, the ground being said to be too rough
for trawling. This is a small-boat ground, and minn kota endura is done mainly in the summertime
season. Cod and pollock are taken in thesummer time and spring, and fall; haddock are present in
spring and fall; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in fall and springtime. This is not a hake ground.
Old Egg Rock. This rock and roll is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a
NE. and SW. direction. It is 3 miles long by 1 mile wide; has a rocky depths and bottom of 25 to 30
fathoms. This is also a small-boat ground, where fishing is done mostly by hand lines, but trawls also
are used. This ground is fished by the larger vessels in the slip months when the weather is too
rough for fishing on the outside reasons. , and a few pollock are taken in fall and spring; hake in fair
number inside the fall months.Cod and haddock
Midsection Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It depends on a NE. and SW.
direction and is also about 1 mile long by ? distance wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and
the bottom is difficult and rocky. It is actually a small-vessel ground mostly and also of little
importance like a fishing ground. Cod are present the year close to haddock in late summer and
spring season with a smaller number in the fall. Cusk are here the year around. A few pollock are
here in the spring and tumble.
Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 mls, whence the ground stretches WSW to
in 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock and roll with an average thickness of 1 distance. The depths operate
from 15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are sharp and rocky; the deeps, gravel and clay. There are
places ? mile long and others 3 miles long experiencing depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these
places have special brands: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds talked about
here and those mentioned before are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these
seem to be fishing spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. About the Broken Ground the minn
kota endura season is from June 1 by way of September. Herring normally are abundant on this page
from May to September. Cod are taken outside of the grounds in fall and spring. Pollock and small
cod are taken on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud bottom in fall and summer and
hake on the mud base in fall and summer.
Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies east from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island over
Green Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Tropical island. This ledge includes two rocky
shoals with depths of 3 to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in level and 1/4 mile separate lying NW
and SE from the other person. To the westward of these is broken soil nearly to Petit Manan. These
are favored small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge drops instantly into the mud. In May large cod
are caught on the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30 fathoms. Hake and haddock are
taken in late spring season (May) and fall. Minn Kota Endura is by palm line and trawl.
Ben's Ground. Is ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Petit Manan Light to northward
of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain on the west side of Trafton's Island or Pond
Island Gentle to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The earth is circular in shape, about 3/4 mile
throughout, having 14 to 30 fathoms water. The bottom is of mud and stones. This ground is of little
value except as a small-boat floor in summer for cod and haddock. Hake are adopted the muddy
bottom part near it, It really is a winter haddock terrain in calm weather, these fish leaving it in the
hard storms, the water being somewhat too shallow so they can "ride out a blow" in comfort, This
kind of at least is the reason the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of their taking on shoal
grounds after a period of heavy weather.
Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest spot, SSE from Petit
Manan and 4? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles above an
irregular bottom part, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps are
Cod, haddock and dirty are taken here in June and could, hake from July to September, It really is a
good lobster ground, also, Minn Kota Endura the following is by handline and trawl operated from
vessels and small boats from close to-by Maine ports.
Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This is situated SSE from Petit Manan 7 kilometers to the
center. It is actually 2 miles long SW and NE and one mile wide and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the
bottom of rocks and mud is incredibly uneven, The shoalest portion is near the center. It is said to be
a good cod and haddock ground, and is also mainly a small fishing boat ground, although some
vessel fishing is maintained here in the spring.
Black Ledges Ground. This terrain lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges, or Black
color Ledges. It is a great haddock ground for a brief season in the spring and early summer season
when the fish are following the herring educational institutions. In general it is a little-boat soil on
which chiefly hand lines and trawls are operated, A couple of cod and cusk are taken within the fall,
which is a good lobster floor.
Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern part
bears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 distance distant The ridge is much broken, its average width
getting ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. In 30 to
35 fathoms, on a muddy bottom, hake are abundant from July to October, inclusive, although it is
really not much fished around the shoaler spots. Cod and cusk are found here in the slip and spring;
haddock from October to January, inclusive. Angling here is done by tiny boats and little vessels
mainly from Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor by hand and trawl line. It is a very good lobster
ground.
Martins Ground; Hillards Reef. The center bears WSW. from Schoodic Point, distant 3 miles. It is a
difficult patch of 4 or 5 acres and has depths of from 15 to 25 fathoms. It is not important with the
exception of its hand-lining for haddock and cod inside the spring and fall months and for hake in the
fall. It really is a good lobster soil.
Egg Rock Cracked Ground. This is a difficult ridge making out S. by W. from Egg Rock and roll
Ledges and is a couple of miles long by 14 miles wide. It has an unnatural bottom, with depths from
9 to 15 fathoms. This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Grounds, divides the american or Bakers
Tropical isle mud channel from Schoodic mud channel. Both these were formerly considered very
good hake grounds but, although still good, are not as profitable for hake fishing like in past years.
Haddock are taken on the ridge in the spring and also inOctober and October, and December.
Several cod are consumed in the spring and fall. Fishing is actually by hand and trawl line. It is a
great lobster ground.
Inside Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles.
This ground is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in size, and has depths working from 18 to 60
fathoms. The base is ofgravel and rocks, and mud; the shoaler portions are rocky and sharp. Vessels
from Maine ports use this ground, sport fishing by hand line and trawl. Cod and haddock are
abundant here in fall and spring, and hake fishing is good from the summer. It is a very good lobster
ground.
External Schoodic Ridge. The northwest part of this floor bears SE. from Bakers Island, through
which it is distant 22 miles. It lies 7 miles outside the house Inner Schoodic, has long been
considered one of the best shore minn kota endura grounds of your Maine coast, yet still seems to
deserve the reputation. The ridge is about 8 miles long in a NE. and SW. course, lying. Make certain
anyone check and maintain the boat’s fuel, gas along with electrical methods upon a normal
basisnearly parallel with the adjacent coastline. Its greatest breadth is 6 mls. The bottom is damaged
and irregular and has depths from 22 to 80 fathoms over gravel and rocks on the shoaler mud and
pieces on the deeps. Primarily Maine vessels seafood this ground, employing hand line and trawl.
pollock, haddock, cusk and Cod and hake are present here from June to December, and a few large
halibut, up to 300 pounds in weight, are taken here in July and June.
Attach Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge is SE. by E. from the Big Slope of Mount Wasteland Island.
From Schoodic Island to the center of this ground is approximately 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and
W. by S, is 2 miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. On the ends sand and clay predominate, though depths are
from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are rocky. This is a comparatively modest ground, but it furnishes
good cod fishing in the spring (April to July) and fall. Cusk are consumed the fall and spring.
Virtually no haddock are taken right here. Hake are located in the deep water on the W. and SW.
inspring and summer, and fall; trawl collections principally are used in this article. It is a good
lobster ground but is too distant for provide fishing methods.
Level Ground. This floor lies between Mount Swan and Desert Island, SW. from Long Island. In 50
fathoms, on the hard mud bottom, there is good minn kota endura for hake in the summer. Fishing is
by palm line and trawl.
Enoch's Shoal. This shoal lies ENE. 3 miles from Great Duck Island. This is a small hummock on the
outer areas of a ridge extending out to it from Great Duck tropical island. It has a sharp, difficult
bottom with depths of about 18 fathoms. Hand lining and trawling are the approaches employed to
take a number of cod in early early spring; haddock are within small numbers during the summer as
well as a small quantity of hake. It is a excellent lobster ground.
Financial institutions Ground. The heart bears SE. by S. from Wonderful Duck Island, faraway about
5 miles. It is about 1? miles long inside a NE. and SW. direction by 1/4 distance wide and has a mud
bottom with depths from 35 to 50 fathoms. It is mainly a small-boat floor, fished mostly during the
summer time, when hake are fairly abundant and there are a few cod and haddock. It is a lobster
ground, also.
Casing Ground. This lies SE. from Extended island Head, that the center of the ground is distant 6
miles. It is 2 miles long, in a NE. and SW. path and about ? mile broad. In the middle portion is really
a shoal of 25 fathoms, its bottom part sharp rocks. On all sides of this shoal the bottom is quite
abnormal, consisting of pebbles and mud. The greatest degree, near the edge of the financial
institution, is 50 fathoms. Cod and haddock, together with a few cusk and pollock, are taken here in
June, July, and August and even into the delayed fall, but it is primarily a hake sport fishing ground
for tiny boats and an infrequent larger craft, all using hand range and trawl. It really is a good
lobster terrain.
Abner Ground. This ground is SSE. from Gott's Island, distant 8 kilometers. It extends 1? miles in a
NE. and SW. direction and is about 1/4 mile wide. The bottom is rocks, dirt and broken, with depths
of from 25 to 50 fathoms. This really is principally a haddock ground, the best time of year being in
July and August, and is resorted to mostly by small craft.
Grumpy. Extends from SE. 4? miles from Eastern Ear of Isle au Haute to SE. 1/4 E. from the western
head of Isle au Haute, distant 7 miles. This ground is 2? a long way long by 3/4 distance wide and
has a tiny shoal of 14 fathoms on the northeast part. Over all of those other ground the average
depths run from 35 to 40 fathoms over a gravelly underside. Though not of great importance of late
years, this was formerly considered one of the best inshore grounds for cod for the entire year and
then for haddock in winter. Hake usually are numerous just off the southeast edge in summer. This
bank is mainly fished by create from ports of eastern Maine--small vessels as a rule--and the
principal way is by trawling, while there is considerable hand-lining for cod in 25 fathoms in June
and July. Spots: Big Camden Mountain over the Eastern Ear of Isle au Haute; Fog Tropical isle in
Jericho Bay, touching on the eastern part of Big Table spoon Island; Brimstone in between Isle au
Haute and the Western Hearing.
Hatchell Ground. This ground lies SE. by E 3/4 E. 9? miles in the western head of Isle au Haute.

Tropical island in the great or center Saddle of Isle au Haute.
Blue Hill Floor. This ground is approximately E: by S. ? S from the western head of Isle au Haute,
distant 7 kilometers. The bottom consists of pea gravel and pebbles. Spots: Brimstone Island out by
the western mind of Isle au Haute and Blue Hill on the west side of Marshall Island. These
represents lead to a depth of 25 fathoms on the northeast part of the ground, deepening southwest
to 40 fathoms in 1 mile in the shoaler part, which happens to be about ? mile vast, part of the
ground, deepening southwest to 40 fathoms in 1 mile from the shoaler part, which is about ? mile
wide. This is a great ground for cod in the fall and spring but is best for haddock during the whole
winter. Hand trawl and lines are utilized.

and handline. It really is a good lobster terrain. Marks: Bring Glowing blue Hill Mountain inside the
saddle of Bright white Horse; Brimstone demonstrating between Western Isle and Ear au Haute.
Outer Horse Reef. This is a quick distance SW. from the Inner Reef, with only a narrow gully
between. The small shoal falls off speedily on all sides. It has a depths of 30 fathoms. Over a space
1/4 mile in size the bottom is gravelly. species and Months are as on Inner Horse Reef.
Hake Ground. To the north of Monhegan tropical island lies a repair called the Hake Terrain or Mud
Route, the first name due to the abundance of hake taken here throughout June, July, and August. It
extends from just outside White Head to abreast of Monhegan Island on the north side. The depths
vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, along with the ground is still deemed one of the best hake grounds

of an unnatural, broken piece of rocky ground about midway between Vinalhaven and Seal Island.
Otter Island Reef may be the eastern section, lying down 4 miles W. by S. by 1/4 S. from the western
head of Isle au Haute. Depths here are from 10 to 25 fathoms over a rocky base. The trawl, formerly
not much used right here, is now in general use. This is a haddock and cod ground at seasons when
these fish are in shoal water, but it is perfect for cod in winter and spring and for haddock in the fall,
from November 1 to January 1.
Older Ripper. This lies S. from the European Ground (Western Reef) and 10 miles WSW. from
Criehaven or Ragged Tropical isle. Apparently this is a part of the Western Ground. About the deep-
h2o mud bottom among these (Ripper and Western Reef) is useful hake fishing in summer, and cusk
are abundant from May to the http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/ time when the dogfish attack the
ground, usually about July 5 to 10.
Crie Ridges. These lie 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock, 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven or Ragged
Island, and run SE. from Western Ground toward Matinicus, distant 4? to 5 mls. Cod, pollock, and
cusk are on this page in the spring, and haddock are abundant within the fall.
Bald Ridges. These begin just outside Wooden Tennis ball Island and operate off in a almost direct

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04 The fish of these shore grounds, due probably to the greater large quantity of food in this article, are thought to be distinctly superior in quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshore banks. The cod and the haddock, specifically, of the Gulf of Maine are specifically well conditioned sea food and are noted for their excellence. The stats presented in Table 2 show only a fraction of the catch from the Inner Grounds, since they deal completely with the fares of fishing vessels of 5 net loads and over. There are literally thousands of the so-called "accredited" or "under-tonned" boats, mostly gill-netters, that take countless pounds from these oceans annually, principally cod and haddock. On the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are more than 300 weirs which furnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures are already chosen as representing an average season) 77,000,000 weight of herring. About the coast of Massachusetts there are 50 or more weirs and fish traps, and in the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Reason for Maine there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore islands, or perhaps in the open seas, and all these have a rich harvest from all of these waters. , there is the lobster fishery, more important within the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in http://www.minn-kota.com/minn-kota/minn-kota-endura/ the states. Then and too Of these various branches of the fisheries industries couple of statistics are available, however we may say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" watercraft mentioned landed 5,324,426 pounds of fish on the port of Boston, mostly of cod and haddock, and this the same type of craft in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, principally of ground sea food. We also know that every small town, town, island and hamlet and city together this nearly 4,000 'miles of coast line takes its toll in the sea. Lukes Rock. This rock lies S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, spherical in shape, and about 1 mile in size. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isrocks and gravel, and mud. This is mostly a small-motorboat minn kota endura ground, there is however some vessel minn kota endura. Hake are used here from June to September, comprehensive; cod are present concerning the rocks the year about. Pollock are within fall and springtime, and haddock from December to Feb, inclusive. Fishing is as simple as hand and trawl line. Newfound Terrain. A small rocky spot about 1/4 mile over with an automatic buoy in the center for guidance into the Bay of Fundy. It is a small-motorboat ground having depths averaging 18 fathoms. It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. Kinds and seasons are as on Lukes Rock. Fishing is by trawl and fingers line. Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 mile in diameter, and 30 fathoms more than a level bottom. Minn Kota Endura is done by hand range and trawl. Cod are present the year close to, a few haddock in the fall, hake during the summer time but not in the fall, and pollock in fall and spring. Handspike Ground. Eight miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly round in form, and ? mile across. It possesses a bottom of rocks and depths of from 35 to 40 fathoms. seasons and Species are similar as on Lukes Rock, but mostly cod and pollock are taken on this page by hand and trawl line.
  • 2. American Egg Rock. This is certainly SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 miles distant, lying in the NE. and SW. direction, 3 mls long by 1 mile wide. The bottom issharp and irregular, and difficult and has 25 to 30 fathoms. Minn Kota Endura here is mostly manually line, the ground being said to be too rough for trawling. This is a small-boat ground, and minn kota endura is done mainly in the summertime season. Cod and pollock are taken in thesummer time and spring, and fall; haddock are present in spring and fall; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in fall and springtime. This is not a hake ground. Old Egg Rock. This rock and roll is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a NE. and SW. direction. It is 3 miles long by 1 mile wide; has a rocky depths and bottom of 25 to 30 fathoms. This is also a small-boat ground, where fishing is done mostly by hand lines, but trawls also are used. This ground is fished by the larger vessels in the slip months when the weather is too rough for fishing on the outside reasons. , and a few pollock are taken in fall and spring; hake in fair number inside the fall months.Cod and haddock Midsection Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It depends on a NE. and SW. direction and is also about 1 mile long by ? distance wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and the bottom is difficult and rocky. It is actually a small-vessel ground mostly and also of little importance like a fishing ground. Cod are present the year close to haddock in late summer and spring season with a smaller number in the fall. Cusk are here the year around. A few pollock are here in the spring and tumble. Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 mls, whence the ground stretches WSW to in 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock and roll with an average thickness of 1 distance. The depths operate from 15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are sharp and rocky; the deeps, gravel and clay. There are places ? mile long and others 3 miles long experiencing depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these places have special brands: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds talked about here and those mentioned before are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these seem to be fishing spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. About the Broken Ground the minn kota endura season is from June 1 by way of September. Herring normally are abundant on this page from May to September. Cod are taken outside of the grounds in fall and spring. Pollock and small cod are taken on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud bottom in fall and summer and hake on the mud base in fall and summer. Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies east from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island over Green Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Tropical island. This ledge includes two rocky shoals with depths of 3 to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in level and 1/4 mile separate lying NW and SE from the other person. To the westward of these is broken soil nearly to Petit Manan. These are favored small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge drops instantly into the mud. In May large cod are caught on the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30 fathoms. Hake and haddock are taken in late spring season (May) and fall. Minn Kota Endura is by palm line and trawl. Ben's Ground. Is ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Petit Manan Light to northward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain on the west side of Trafton's Island or Pond Island Gentle to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The earth is circular in shape, about 3/4 mile throughout, having 14 to 30 fathoms water. The bottom is of mud and stones. This ground is of little value except as a small-boat floor in summer for cod and haddock. Hake are adopted the muddy bottom part near it, It really is a winter haddock terrain in calm weather, these fish leaving it in the hard storms, the water being somewhat too shallow so they can "ride out a blow" in comfort, This kind of at least is the reason the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of their taking on shoal grounds after a period of heavy weather.
  • 3. Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest spot, SSE from Petit Manan and 4? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles above an irregular bottom part, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps are Cod, haddock and dirty are taken here in June and could, hake from July to September, It really is a good lobster ground, also, Minn Kota Endura the following is by handline and trawl operated from vessels and small boats from close to-by Maine ports. Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This is situated SSE from Petit Manan 7 kilometers to the center. It is actually 2 miles long SW and NE and one mile wide and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the bottom of rocks and mud is incredibly uneven, The shoalest portion is near the center. It is said to be a good cod and haddock ground, and is also mainly a small fishing boat ground, although some vessel fishing is maintained here in the spring. Black Ledges Ground. This terrain lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges, or Black color Ledges. It is a great haddock ground for a brief season in the spring and early summer season when the fish are following the herring educational institutions. In general it is a little-boat soil on which chiefly hand lines and trawls are operated, A couple of cod and cusk are taken within the fall, which is a good lobster floor. Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern part bears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 distance distant The ridge is much broken, its average width getting ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. In 30 to 35 fathoms, on a muddy bottom, hake are abundant from July to October, inclusive, although it is really not much fished around the shoaler spots. Cod and cusk are found here in the slip and spring; haddock from October to January, inclusive. Angling here is done by tiny boats and little vessels mainly from Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor by hand and trawl line. It is a very good lobster ground. Martins Ground; Hillards Reef. The center bears WSW. from Schoodic Point, distant 3 miles. It is a difficult patch of 4 or 5 acres and has depths of from 15 to 25 fathoms. It is not important with the exception of its hand-lining for haddock and cod inside the spring and fall months and for hake in the fall. It really is a good lobster soil. Egg Rock Cracked Ground. This is a difficult ridge making out S. by W. from Egg Rock and roll Ledges and is a couple of miles long by 14 miles wide. It has an unnatural bottom, with depths from 9 to 15 fathoms. This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Grounds, divides the american or Bakers Tropical isle mud channel from Schoodic mud channel. Both these were formerly considered very good hake grounds but, although still good, are not as profitable for hake fishing like in past years. Haddock are taken on the ridge in the spring and also inOctober and October, and December. Several cod are consumed in the spring and fall. Fishing is actually by hand and trawl line. It is a great lobster ground. Inside Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles. This ground is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in size, and has depths working from 18 to 60 fathoms. The base is ofgravel and rocks, and mud; the shoaler portions are rocky and sharp. Vessels from Maine ports use this ground, sport fishing by hand line and trawl. Cod and haddock are abundant here in fall and spring, and hake fishing is good from the summer. It is a very good lobster ground.
  • 4. External Schoodic Ridge. The northwest part of this floor bears SE. from Bakers Island, through which it is distant 22 miles. It lies 7 miles outside the house Inner Schoodic, has long been considered one of the best shore minn kota endura grounds of your Maine coast, yet still seems to deserve the reputation. The ridge is about 8 miles long in a NE. and SW. course, lying. Make certain anyone check and maintain the boat’s fuel, gas along with electrical methods upon a normal basisnearly parallel with the adjacent coastline. Its greatest breadth is 6 mls. The bottom is damaged and irregular and has depths from 22 to 80 fathoms over gravel and rocks on the shoaler mud and pieces on the deeps. Primarily Maine vessels seafood this ground, employing hand line and trawl. pollock, haddock, cusk and Cod and hake are present here from June to December, and a few large halibut, up to 300 pounds in weight, are taken here in July and June. Attach Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge is SE. by E. from the Big Slope of Mount Wasteland Island. From Schoodic Island to the center of this ground is approximately 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and W. by S, is 2 miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. On the ends sand and clay predominate, though depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are rocky. This is a comparatively modest ground, but it furnishes good cod fishing in the spring (April to July) and fall. Cusk are consumed the fall and spring. Virtually no haddock are taken right here. Hake are located in the deep water on the W. and SW. inspring and summer, and fall; trawl collections principally are used in this article. It is a good lobster ground but is too distant for provide fishing methods. Level Ground. This floor lies between Mount Swan and Desert Island, SW. from Long Island. In 50 fathoms, on the hard mud bottom, there is good minn kota endura for hake in the summer. Fishing is by palm line and trawl. Enoch's Shoal. This shoal lies ENE. 3 miles from Great Duck Island. This is a small hummock on the outer areas of a ridge extending out to it from Great Duck tropical island. It has a sharp, difficult bottom with depths of about 18 fathoms. Hand lining and trawling are the approaches employed to take a number of cod in early early spring; haddock are within small numbers during the summer as well as a small quantity of hake. It is a excellent lobster ground. Financial institutions Ground. The heart bears SE. by S. from Wonderful Duck Island, faraway about 5 miles. It is about 1? miles long inside a NE. and SW. direction by 1/4 distance wide and has a mud bottom with depths from 35 to 50 fathoms. It is mainly a small-boat floor, fished mostly during the summer time, when hake are fairly abundant and there are a few cod and haddock. It is a lobster ground, also. Casing Ground. This lies SE. from Extended island Head, that the center of the ground is distant 6 miles. It is 2 miles long, in a NE. and SW. path and about ? mile broad.
