WHERE TO SURF IN PUERTO
VIEJO, COSTA RICA?
The Caribbean Coast of Costa
Rica is known for its world class
surfing. The famous “Salsa Brava”
waves start just beyond the coral
reef.
Around the area of Puerto Viejo
and Cocles there are waves for all
levels.
SURFING IN PUERTO VIEJO
COSTA RICA
PLAYA NEGRA
 Playa Negra in Limon is an exposed beach break that has very
consistent surf Works best in offshore winds from the southwest.
Most of the surf comes fis in the form of windswells and the ideal
wave angle is from the northeast. The beach breaks offer lefts
and rights. Rarely crowded here.

PLAYA COCLES
 The beach breaks of Playa Cocles are mellow and fun, perfect
for beginners, while a short left breaks beside an island at the
north end, offering mid tide slashable walls, until the swell gets
overhead.

PLAYA CHIQUITA
 Playa Chiquita is minutes from Puerto Viejo, Limon. This area is an
off-the-tracks surfing destination in winter months, and snorkeling
and diving in the summer.
PLAYA GRANDE
 From September to October the waves roll onto the beach like
ripples from a stone cast across the pond, but from December
through March the waves grow big enough to ride making Playa
Grande a popular surf sport.
SALSA BRAVA
 The road gets rough to Puerto Viejo, but is worth the hassle as it is home to the notorious Salsa
Brava, a righthand reefbreak that can hold 12ft+ (4m). This fairly short, barreling wave with two
distinct sections is consistent, heavy and crowds are the rule, especially from Dec to March.
The outer reef, Long Shoal, has steep, fast take-offs into short shoulders, perfect for
experienced surfers willing to make the long 3km/2mi paddle/boat ride to escape the SB
crowd.
