Unit 57: Photography and
Photographic Practice
Task 4 Selection of final images &
review
Aim of Shoot
When I began my photo shoot, I
had the intention of taking several
photos some of an urban
landscape and some of a rural
landscape. My aim for this photo
shoot was to capture images,
whilst both looking impressive and
professional, of the rural
landscapes looking beautiful and
appealing; yet shedding a more
negative light on the urban
images making them look dark
and mysterious rather than going
with the usual theme of impressive
modern cities.
Description of shoot
• The image shown on the right is one of my final
edits that I have chosen from my photo-shoot
this particular image is probably my favourite of
all the final edits that I have taken, This is
because the photograph really sticks to my
original intentions of the project by viewing the
city in an old fashioned and dark way instead of
bright and modern. To capture this image I went
into Eccles town centre and walked to the top of
a multi-story car park; I then found the best
angle with the kind of scenery I wanted in the
background. Once the picture was taken I used
Adobe Photoshop to edit the photo by cutting
out the waste to make the image more
professional and conform more to the rule of
thirds. I also put effects on the photograph to
sharpen and darken the image, this made the
image work better for the style I had hoped for.
• Overall I think that this image went very well
because I kept my original shoot plan and
created a very professional image from a very
interesting angle.

Selection of unedited images
Editing effects
• With this photograph, I initially
decided to edit the vibrancy and
sharpen the image to make the detail
stand out more and colours appear
brighter and more defined. I then
decided that increasing the colour
scale of the image made it look too
surreal and unprofessional; I therefore
decided to continue editing the image
by using a pre set black and white
filter to easily manipulate the image
into the correct scale of black and
white that gives the image the look I
wanted it to have.
Final Images
• This is the final image after I
have completed the editing
process. I Think the final image
looks good because the black
and white effect really gives it
a vintage old time feel. The
sharpness and depth of the
image make the photograph
look professional and unique.
The downside to this editing
technique is that the picture is
less clear than it could be,
however this is a small
compromise for the chosen
style.
Editing effects
• With this image I have started off
by cropping the waste image
around the edges to make sure
that the action of the shot is more
central and on line with the rule of
thirds, I then decided to
manipulate the actual image by
altering the hue and saturation
whilst turning the contrast up and
the brightness slightly down,
Final Images
• Here is the image completed
after editing, I think that the
brightness and contrast
alterations worked really well
with the image to create a
photo that looks like a perfect
evening shot with the sun
setting in the background. The
depth of field works well with
the houses in the background
and the grass in the
foreground. I picked this photo
mainly for these reasons as well
as the fact that it conforms to
the rule of thirds brilliantly.
Capture log
• Setting – The photo was taken
using a manual setting allowing
me to get the correct zoom
and focus to gain a good
depth of field.
• Shutter Speed – The
photograph was taken using a
relatively high shutter speed to
avoid any unwanted blurring.
• Aperture – For this picture a
smaller aperture was required
as I had planned for a large
depth of field and clear view.
• ISO – I used a high ISO of
around 400-800 for this image
as it was taken late on when it
was dark.
Editing effects
• For this photograph the editing
process was simple, all I really had to
do was turn the contrast up and the
brightness down a small amount, this
made the sky a more impressive deep
shade of blue and the detail on the
tree stands out far more than it did
with the contrast low.
Final Images
• This is the final image complete
with the edits, I chose this image
because it is completely different
to all the other images in my photo
shoot and despite being simple it
is far more impressive than most
boring images of a field or a lake.
The image conforms well with the
rule of thirds as no area of the
image lacks a focus point and the
focus in general makes the
photograph look interesting and
unusual.
Capture log
• The picture was taken using an
automatic camera setting in order
to get the focus on the whole of
the tree while maintaining a steady
angle without a tripod.
• The shutter speed used for this
image was high because the
image needed to be very sharp
and quickly taken due to the
angle.
• The aperture was small because
the camera was facing the sky and
I was planning on making the
picture dark.
• The ISO used was 400 because I
wanted a dark image but I wanted
it clear
Editing effects
• For this image I simply sharpened the
colours to make the blur in the
background stand out more as depth
of field. I also added a very opaque
white filter over the image to create a
wintery feel with the snow in the
background.
Final Images
• Mention focus, depth of field,
rule of thirds, composition,
• I chose this image because it
gives off a very wintery feel to it
whilst looking professional
because of the techniques I
used including depth of field
and rule of thirds I also thought
a lot about the composition of
this image because when I
edited it I added a white filter
to almost fade the image out .
Capture log
• This picture was taken using a
manual setting on the camera
in order to get the focus
correct on the central plants in
the foreground
• The shutter speed used is again
high in order to capture a
sharp image with depth of
field.
• A medium aperture was used
in order to keep too much
daylight out.
• The ISO was set to 800 to make
the image fit with the white
theme.
Editing effects
• This was the first image in my photo
shoot that I decided to edit; in this
picture I was hoping to achieve a
dark, gloomy approach on the city.
To do this I first cropped the image to
only show the bits that looked
important to my theme, I then altered
the brightness around the edges to
make the picture look sinister and
dark. Finally I added a cooling filter
over the image giving it a cold blue
look to emphasize the darkness.
Final Images
• This is the final image after the
editing. I personally like the
image because it really works
with what I was trying to
achieve with my photos. The
photo is a perfect
representation of an old
fashioned city scape that is
composed very well with the
rule of thirds definitely being
present. The focus works well to
create a depth of field with the
buildings in the background
being noticeably far away.
Capture log
• The picture was taken with an
automatic focus to definitely
get the optimum focus possible
for a landscape image.
• A high shutter speed is used to
make the image crisp and
clear as I wanted to catch the
image and smoke in perfect
detail.
• A small aperture was used as I
wanted the image to look dark
and gloomy.
• The ISO was set to 400 because
I wanted the buildings to
appear dark.
Rejected Images
• These are three images that I took
in my photo-shoot that I decided
didn’t make the cut to be chosen
images for my final collection. This
Is because they didn’t strike me as
unique and different to every other
image and didn’t look at all
special, more like pictures that
anybody with a camera could
take. Another reason is that with
some images the theme I was
going for simply wasn’t present.
With the image of the tree, this
didn’t make the cut because I took
several images similar and this
one wasn’t as effective as the rest.
Aims for next project
• Whilst Planning and carrying out this photo-shoot I have learnt a lot about all the
different techniques of photography including using the camera effectively to
create depth of field and a rule of thirds, whilst also bearing in mind the ability
to change the shutter speed to catch two photos of the exact same thing that both
look completely different. I also feel that I have learnt a lot about what it is
possible to take photos of during photography and how to make anything look
interesting.
• When I next do a photo-shoot I would definitely take the time to improve my
images by using all of these techniques and being more patient about getting the
right photos. I would also spend more time planning the shoot rather than
immediately going out to get the pictures without thinking first where would be
the best and most appropriate places to go.

  • 19. Final Images • This is the final image after the editing. I personally like the image because it really works with what I was trying to achieve with my photos. The photo is a perfect representation of an old fashioned city scape that is composed very well with the rule of thirds definitely being present. The focus works well to create a depth of field with the buildings in the background being noticeably far away.
  • 20. Capture log • The picture was taken with an automatic focus to definitely get the optimum focus possible for a landscape image. • A high shutter speed is used to make the image crisp and clear as I wanted to catch the image and smoke in perfect detail. • A small aperture was used as I wanted the image to look dark and gloomy. • The ISO was set to 400 because I wanted the buildings to appear dark.
  • 21. Rejected Images • These are three images that I took in my photo-shoot that I decided didn’t make the cut to be chosen images for my final collection. This Is because they didn’t strike me as unique and different to every other image and didn’t look at all special, more like pictures that anybody with a camera could take. Another reason is that with some images the theme I was going for simply wasn’t present. With the image of the tree, this didn’t make the cut because I took several images similar and this one wasn’t as effective as the rest.
  • 22. Aims for next project • Whilst Planning and carrying out this photo-shoot I have learnt a lot about all the different techniques of photography including using the camera effectively to create depth of field and a rule of thirds, whilst also bearing in mind the ability to change the shutter speed to catch two photos of the exact same thing that both look completely different. I also feel that I have learnt a lot about what it is possible to take photos of during photography and how to make anything look interesting. • When I next do a photo-shoot I would definitely take the time to improve my images by using all of these techniques and being more patient about getting the right photos. I would also spend more time planning the shoot rather than immediately going out to get the pictures without thinking first where would be the best and most appropriate places to go.
