3. History of LSU
Louisiana S tate U niversity and Agricultural & M echanical
C ollege h ad its origin in certain land gra nts m ade by the
U nited S tates governm ent in 1806, 181 1, and 1827 for use as
a sem inary of learning. In 1853, the Louisiana G eneral
A ssem bly established the S em inary of Learning of the S tate
of Louisiana near P ineville, Louisiana. The institution opened
January 2, 18 60, w ith C ol. W illiam Tecum seh S herm an as
superintendent. The school closed June 30, 186 1, because of
the C ivil W ar. It reopened o n A pril 1, but w as again closed on
A pril 23, 1863, due to the invasion of the R ed R iver V alley by
the federal arm y.
The sem inary reopened O ctober 2, 1865, only to b e burned
O ctober 15, 1869. O n N ovem be r 1, 1869, the institution
resum ed its exercises in B a ton R oug e, w here it has since rem ained. In 18 70, the nam e of the institution w as changed to
Louisiana S tate U niversity.
Louisiana S tate A gricultural & M echanical C ollege w as established by a n act of the legislature, approved A pril 7, 1874, to
carry out the U nited S tates M orrill A ct of 1862, granting lan ds for this purpose. It tem porarily opened in N ew O rleans, June
1, 1874, w here it rem ained until it m erged w ith Louisiana S tate U niversity in 1877.

sequence they are usually taken. C ourses can be taken out of order as long as all prerequisites are met.
12. Why I want to attend this University
• I would like to attend LSU, because I feel it is a great University and I
would like to study Mechanic Engineering. And Most of all I would like to
play Football. LSU has a great Football team. I really think I can get a good
education from LSU and I will end up having a great Job.
