This autumn saw the release of long awaited thriller film “I’ll be watching you.”, the
brand new production from directors Sukhraj Gill and Emilie Hardcastle, who have
collaborated to create an unorthodox thriller filmwith a shocking twist.
The plotline of this film is centred on popular teenager Leo (Calum Lewin) and his
seemingly normal every day life. Straight from the first scene, it is clear to see that
Leo is not your average popular boy, as he is on a date with not so popular teenager
Eliza (Kirsty Davenport), who is known for being the outcast, unusual girl that the
popular group sees as an easy target for torment. However against expectation,
Eliza, rather than it being the other way around, stands up Leo. This means that he is
then left to instead interact with third teenager, Poppy (Danielle Uttley), who is also
in Leo’s popular group. The two share a friend based coffee date, only for Leo’s
original date (Eliza) to show up soon after, appearing outraged at the sight of Leo
with another girl perhaps to the point that it’s gone a little too far past ‘normal
teenage girl is upset to see date with other girl’ and has reached a point that is more
‘freaky teenage girl shows murderous rage’.
The next day sees Leo and Poppy at school with their friendship group, with Poppy
noticeably flirting with Leo. Again, we see the character of Eliza make an angry
appearance, making it clear that she is far from happy about the way that things are
turning out between Poppy and Leo and making her look almost like she craves
revenge on Leo for how he has betrayed her so easily. This is when Leo begins to
experience some rather out of the ordinary situations, through the use of
anonymous messages in a variety of forms. Leo starts to realise that his situation is
beyond the point of being a joke and is actually a lot more sinister than he’d first
thought.
The end of the film sees a shocking twist that no one could have expected and
reveals that thriller films may not be so predictable anymore… (I feel like this
doesn’t work with my review because it hints on to the twist too much???)
There are a few uneven bumps in the plot, leaving unanswered questions in our
minds even after we watch and it leaves us wondering whether this is a good thing
or rather the opposite. It would have benefited the filmto clarify a few more things
so that we weren’t left with a thousand questions, but nevertheless it was a sure fire
way to make sure we remember this filmlong after viewing it.
2. This refreshing take on the thriller genre shares its good points and its bad points,
but it’s safe to say this (RUN TIME) thriller blows the norm out of the water and
leaves in its wake an innovative production that is worth the watch.
