IT as a Service is the transformation of IT to a more business-centric approach, focusing on outcomes such as operational efficiency, competitiveness and rapid response. This means IT shifts from producing IT services to optimizing production and consumption of those services in ways consistent with business requirements. This changes the role of IT from a cost center to a center of strategic value. - See more at: http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmworld-it-as-service#sthash.WZu43Pfm.dpuf

Datacenter Virtualization
Source: http://wikibon.org/wiki/v/VMware_Dominant_in_Multi-Hypervisor_Data_Centers
Over the last year, VMware Education have re-structured their offerings to provide role-based training and certification tracks in four core learning areas. The learning areas, shown across the top of the table, are Cloud, DataCenter Virtualisation, End User (or Workforce Mobility) and Network Virtualisation.
There are 4 defined roles, from the entry level “Associate” to the top level “Expert” which are shown up the left hand side of the table.
This slide shows the certification within each role for each of the four core areas.
So if you look along the 3rd row of the table, labelled “Professional”, to the 2nd column, headed Datacenter Virtualisation, you can see the certification that you are all familiar with, the VCP5.
The green colour indicates that the certification exam is already available.
For each certification, learning paths exist to help you know what courses you should, or could, take to help you achieve your desired certification. I’ll speak a little bit more about these learning paths later.
In the last row of the table is the newly added “Associate” level which contains the new VMware Certified Associate certification which is the main topic of this webex. As you can see, there are 3 associate level certifications that have just been released (shown in red) with the VCA for network virtualisation expected by the end of the year (shown in blue).
The VMware Certified Associate certification program, or VCA, was launched at VMworld San Francisco in August of this year.
This slide encapsulates the benefits of the program to the candidate taking the program and the employer, or potential employer in the case of academy students.
So, with a VCA certification, candidates could be recognised as someone with the initiative and ability to stay up-to-date with the latest virtualisation technology. The certification should help in their career to set them that little bit apart from other candidates in the IT arena. From a personal perspective, being a VCA should give them greater confidence to talk about virtualisation. With the range of knowledge that’s delivered and tested across the 4 VCA tracks, it will help candidates decide which area of virtualisation they are best suited or most proficient at.
From the employers’ perspective, the VCA program is a way to measure and advertise the competence of their staff whilst giving the employer confidence that their staff are keeping up with technology and have the knowledge level they need. In fact, completing a VCA track can also highlight where more advanced training may be required. And of course, no employer wants to spend any more than they absolutely have to to support and develop their staff so as a training and certification program that is fully online, it minimises expenses and time away from the office.
The VCA certification program will increase awareness of VMware technology because more people will be talking about VMware technology. The goals of the VCA program support this end because we will have VCAs out there who can talk knowledgeably about VMware products, product capabilities and features and who are aware of market trends and best practices. In their talks with potential employers, VCAs will sound credible by demonstrating an understanding of the problems that IT face and the challenges that IT are presented with by the business. VCAs can map those business needs to VMware products and contribute to discussions involving VMware-based solutions.
The VCA certification is at a much lower level than the VCP so it in no way replaces, or even overlaps the VCP. I would say that there is quite a knowledge gap between the VCA and VCP but as an entry level certification, the VCA is a good way to expand your knowledge from one core area to another, for example, for a datacenter virtualisation VCP, the VCA program provides a first step toward Cloud, Workforce Mobility and Network Virtualisation competency.
For those new to VMware certification, the VCA exam could be seen as a springboard to energise and kick-start candidates on their way to higher level of achievement, VCP and above.
Because the training and exams are online, because the elearning is free and because there are promotions to encourage take-up of the VCA, the program can be seen as a low-cost way to explore other areas of VMware technology and give candidates a chance to learn a little bit about other parts of the virtualisation spectrum to see whether it might be a path they would like to follow.
On this slide you can see where VCA fits into existing VMware certification and accreditation. This official recognition is designed for two domains; the customer/end user realm (on the left) where you all operate and the Partner domain (on the right) which covers the network of VMware distributors and resellers.
In the Partner domain, the VMware Sales Professional (VSP) and VMware Technical Sales Professional (VTSP) accreditations are designed to verify sales and technical sales skills that are critical to VMware salespeople.
In the end user/customer domain, VCP and the more advanced, VCAP, are designed to verify hands-on administrative and engineering skills critical to customer success with VMware products. So, another way to look at this - VMware accreditations are focused on pre-sales and closing the deal and VMware certifications provide the skills to run the solutions that are sold.
The expert certification level (VCDX) is currently the only point in this model where the customer/end-user and partner domains are completely merged. VCDX certification is very hard to achieve and relies heavily on real-world experience to prove expertise across a wide range of skills that are applicable in both domains.
Ok, so as mentioned previously, there are currently 3, but will be 4, VCA tracks covering datacenter virtualisation, cloud, workforce mobility and network virtualisation.
This slide gives a very brief insight into the kind of knowledge that each track delivers and as you can see, that knowledge is at a high level and aims to provide, what you might call, a ‘helicopter view’ of VMware technology as solutions to business needs. There are no numbers and capacities to learn here, as you would expect if you were preparing for a VCP exam.
I think each box should also include “terminology” as part of the content. For some, the VCA program will be the first introduction to terms like host, virtual machine and hypervisor and the exam assumes an understanding of these terms even though it doesn’t directly test them.
There is a free elearning course for each VCA track, currently available in English and Japanese but additional languages will be launched mid October at VMworld in Barcelona.
The datacenter course is 2.5 hours, the Workforce mobility and Cloud courses are 3 hours.
You have to register in MyLearn for each course and it then appears in the myEnrollments section. Once registered you get 4 months to take the course and you then have to action a “finish” in MyLearn so that the course moves from your enrollments to your transcript.
The important point to note here is that whilst the course exists in your enrollments, you can go back into the course at any time, that is, you can run it at your convenience and even have it available to you when you take the online exam.
The courses are modularized, easy to navigate through (forwards and backwards) and the audio is transcribed and attached as notes to the presentation. They have a really high quality finish with animations and interactive quizzes to test understanding. The focus of the delivery is very much on product range, features and real-world use cases. There are NO figures to memorize!
Because VCA is entry level, there are no pre-requisites. Equally, the VCA program is not a pre-requisite for anything else, not for Install, Configure, Manage classes or VCP certifications.
Longer term, the material in the VCA learning will be taken out of the associated ICM classes. This has started with the newest v5.5 vSphere material. So although VCA is not an ICM pre-requisite, its certainly worth recommending as a good way to prepare for the more in depth instructor led classes.
The VCA exams are all online and are run by Pearson Vue so you can take the test from anywhere with internet access.
The exams are all open book which means that you are allowed to have resources to hand to help you answer the questions. I, for example, ran the elearning concurrently whilst I was taking my exam. The open book format encourages learning through knowledge transfer. Its more important to get the knowledge by intelligently using available resources (and that includes asking someone!) than not get the knowledge at all.
There are 50 multiple choice questions in the exam which require that you select 1 or sometimes 2 correct answers.
You have 75 minutes to complete the exam, which is ample time to go through the 50 questions and in most cases, leaves enough time to use the in-built checking facility which allows you to review particular questions or all questions. It also highlights questions where multiple answers were required and you only gave 1. So the exam seems to be designed to help the candidate do as well as they possibly can.
When you finish the exam, you get your result immediately which is given as a score out of 500 with 300 being the pass mark.
For the most part, the exam does test the knowledge delivered in the elearning but don’t be surprised if there are a few questions which require a little extra work. Do make sure you can access the additional resources mentioned in the exam blue print and, where possible, a friend or colleague with ICM level knowledge!
So, how do you go about taking the VCA program?
From the VMware education landing page, you can, at the moment, use the “Trending Now” section to find the VCA courses in the “Top Free” listing.
Or you can just search using “VCA” for the datacenter virtualisation and Cloud courses and, rather awkwardly, “workforce mobility” for the View-based elearning.
To take the course, you must register for it through MyLearn and that registration will be ‘live’ for 4 months during which time you can start and stop the course as often as you like.
So you can take it when and where you want completely at your own convenience.
Although the VCA program is designed as an elearning-exam combination, you don’t have to take the elearning in order to take the VCA exams.
Once you have gone through the entire elearning, it’s a good idea to check out the resources mentioned in the exam blueprint. The blueprint is available on the same page as the link to register for the exam which I’ll show you in a minute.
Here you can see a part of the VCA-Datacenter Virtualisation blueprint with a link to the vSphere Basics guide.
There are also a number of free videos delivered by VMware certified instructors on the VMware learning page which could be of value to prospective VCA exam candidates.
So now you have completed the elearning, you have ensured access to some additional resources or done some additional learning and you are ready to take the exam.
When you select the appropriate exam from the certification page, you’ll be presented with an exam specific page which is headed with the name of the exam and these two boxes. The green box on the left is your link to the exam blueprint. The blue box on the right is your registration link for the exam.
When you click the ‘I’m ready…’ box, you have to sign into MyLearn to register for the exam.
You will then receive an authorization from MyLearn, to the email address that your MyLearn account uses, containing a unique candidate ID. This information is also transparently sent to Pearson Vue so you may have to wait up to 15 minutes before you get the email from MyLearn.
Use the Pearson Vue link in the email to go to the Pearson Vue site. First time users will need to create an account using the candidate ID and supplying name and address to which they want exam certificates to be sent.
Once logged into Pearson Vue, you can see the exams that you are authorized to take from which point you can select when you want to take the exam. The scheduling provides a 2 day time slot from the chosen date.
When you complete the exam, your result is sent back to MyLearn and you get an email requesting that you complete the ‘manage plan’ actions in MyLearn. This is basically a few checkboxes you have to tick under the myEnrollments section.
Once done, your MyLearn transcript is updated with your exam success (of course) and a certificate is posted to you.
Finally, I’d like to draw your attention to the Learning Path Tool which can be accessed from the Vmware education page. This is an excellent education planning resource which helps you decipher which courses are available for you to achieve a specified aim.
Your aim might be, for example, to become VCP certified or it might be to gain competency in a particular product.
Lets take that second example into a demo as I show you the learning path for someone seeking vSphere competency.
Go to demo.
The message here is that everyone is advantaged. People often find our programs too good to be true and want to know what the ‘catch’ is. We have studied the job market and found that there are many thousands of jobs available that require a VCP credential. The people we train commercially usually already have jobs so we are not filling the gap in the job market. By engaging educational institutions they will graduate students that know and proficient on our technology which will enable employer to hire them and deploy our solutions
We offer a ‘superset’ of ILT courses. The reason for this is that IT Academy students don’t always have the background necessary to immediately take a course that leads to certification. Sometimes it is best to deliver the Overview course and Workstation course to familiarize them with the technology. I also tell them that the may make up their own syllabus and mix and match different ILT courses as well as eLearning. We respect our IT Academy schools as educational professionals and don’t tell them how to teach. What we do is to help them acquire the necessary knowledge about VMware and virtualization to make them effective in teaching about it.
We give schools everything they need except the hardware – after all we are a software Company. Schools get our economy of scale which enables them to purchase books directly from our print vendor at about 1/3rd of what it would cost from a normal publisher and certifications directly from Pearson VUE
So as a quick summary of what we have covered.
First I talked about role-based certification for the four core learning areas of datacenter virtualisation, cloud, workforce mobility (or end user computing) and the relatively new, network virtualisation. Certification is being made available from associate level upwards to expert level.
Then I detailed the objectives, goals and positioning of the VCA certification program so that you could see how this high-level, use-case based program is an enabler for both employee and employer and bridges between our end-user and partner domains.
I showed you the 4 VCA programs, providing a brief summary of the content and format of the elearning.
I explained the format of the multiple-choice exam and stepped through the process involving MyLearn registration and authorisation and scheduling in Pearson Vue.
And finally, I demonstrated the VMware Education’s Learning Path Tool which is designed to help all VMware students navigate and plan their route through VMware education and certification.
