EMC collaborates with colleges and universities worldwide to help prepare students for successful careers in a transforming IT industry. The Academic Alliance program offers unique ‘open’ curriculum-based education on technology topics such as cloud computing, big data analytics, and information storage and management. All courseware and faculty training are offered at no cost to qualifying higher education institutions.
The courses focus on technology concepts and principles applicable to any vendor environment, enabling students to develop highly marketable knowledge and skills required in today’s evolving IT industry.
EMC began providing information storage and management education to the academic community in 2006. Our goal was simple – as an industry leader we wanted to help prepare future IT professionals to fill the storage knowledge gap. As the IT landscape has evolved, so has the scope and nature of the knowledge gap, and so have our offerings. We are proud to introduce new courses to Academic Alliances to prepare students for successful careers in the new IT landscape.
The IT industry is going through a huge change. Key trends that are driving this change are cloud, mobile, social and big data. This is driving IT to what IDC calls the 3rd platform of IT. The first platform was around mainframe, second about client/server computing, and the third platform is a new era that we believe is going to be driven by mobile devices.
The third platform is fundamentally different in terms of the number of users accessing data as well as the number of applications that are being run on the platform. Well it is orders of magnitude different in terms of scale. Billions of user and millions of applications. It’s fundamentally different from anything that we’ve seen before.
It is worthwhile noting that the second platform is not going away. The second platform is still going to be around and growing.
Tomorrow’s IT organization—an IT as a Service organization—will present many challenges and opportunities. IT professionals will be responsible for more data than ever, derived from new sources and in new formats. They will need to not only build and maintain technology assets, but also orchestrate services to enable the business to consume them effectively in its operations, decisions, and innovations. This holds profound implications for both traditional and emerging IT roles and skills.
