10. 1. Compassion & mercy to the poor are
not optional.
James 2:13-17 (NIV)
13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to
anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs
over judgment! 14 What good is it, my brothers, if a
man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such
faith save him? 15 Suppose a brother or sister is
without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to
him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,"
but does nothing about his physical needs, what good
is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not
accompanied by action, is dead.

17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his
brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the
love of God be in him?

. 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will
hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many
prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood;
16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil
deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, 17 learn to
do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of
the widow.
18. 8. Mercy to the poor is an evidence of
true heart commitment to God
Amos 5:21-24 (NIV)
21 "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot
stand your assemblies. 22 Even though you bring me
burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept
them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I
will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of
your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a
never-failing stream!

Lord will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of
understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the
Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord-- 3 and
he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not
judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by
what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness
he will judge the needy, with justice he will give
decisions for the poor of the earth. …
20. Isaiah 61:1-2 (NIV)
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because
the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the
poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to

darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of
the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God,

expect someone else?" 4 Jesus replied, "Go back and
report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind
