UNCCD recently launched the Decade for Deserts and the Fight against
Desertification

This was officially done during the Second International Conference on Climate,
Sustainability and Sustainable Development in Semi-arid Regions, organized in
Brasil, August 2010

Furthermore, the Global Mechanism of UNCCD is developing a web-based
knowledge exchange tool to strengthen the role of local stakeholders in decision-
making processes related to Sustainable Land Management (SLM), funded by
the EC (ACP Program)

17. Main aims of the panel review meeting were to
• evaluate project progress year 3
• discuss and fine-tune the next 18-month plan (months 36-54)
• provide the DESIRE team with recommendations and points for further
action (downloadable from website)

Martius, and Prof. Dr. Ioannis Tsanis

18. Recommendations/observations:
• An ambitious, important and relevant project, which is on track and represents
an excellent learning-oriented approach
• Collaboration between partners seems very good
• Added value of the project has to be precise in scientific innovation and
contribution to policies and regulations at national, EU and international level
• Develop story-lines on stakeholder integration and contribution
• The HIS is very good, as well as the entire project website
• Dissemination and exploitation of results (media, fact sheets etc.) is very good
• The gender plan is excellent and exemplary for other projects
• Management team has done a very good job, both scientifically and
technically
DESIRE – where do we stand?
Main conclusion (18 pages report): Good to excellent project (the project has
fully achieved its objectives and technical goals for the period and has even
exceeded expectations)
19. The EC has flagged the project internally for follow-up by EC
programme policy units as a:
• Success story
• High visibility/ media attractive project
• Project with impact on EU policies
• Significant impact on health, safety, environment
• Substantial breakthrough character
• Significant participation from outside EU
• Involvement of top researchers in the field

21. Regarding WB’s and project deliverables:
• WB’s 1-3 should be almost finished or concluded by now
• WB’s 4-6 should be progressing full speed
This will be further summarized and discussed during the
WB consultation sessions today, and coupled back plenary
on Wednesday

22. Main aims of the 5th
DESIRE project workshop are:
• To clarify the current situation in each of the DESIRE study sites (WB leader
consultations)
• Organisation of a poster session of WB4 and WB5 activities per study site
• Discuss the further project planning
• Highlight financial/administrative issues
• Visit the DESIRE field site on the Loess Plateau
• Participate in WB4, 5 and 6 training sessions
• Participate and/or present DESIRE results at the LandCon Conference
