Development of a practical generation of BNCI for
independent home use
The long term goal of rehabilitation for the individual
with an acquired brain injury is resettlement back in the
community away from institutional care. BackHome is
about physical and social autonomy of people with
disabilities, using mainly Brain-Neural Computer
Interfaces (BNCIs) and integrating other assistive
technologies as well. BackHome takes a broad approach
and wants to support the transition from institutional
care to home post rehabilitation and discharge.

People that need assistance, as for instance elderly or disabled people, may be affected by a decline in daily functioning that usually involves the reduction and discontinuity in daily routines and a worsening in the overall quality of life. Thus, there is the need to intelligent systems able to monitor indoor and outdoor activities of users to detect emergencies, recognize activities, send notifications, and provide a summary of all the relevant information. In this talk, a sensor-based telemonitoring system that addresses all that issues will be presented. Its goal is twofold: (i) helping and supporting people (e.g., elderly or disabled) at home; and (ii) giving a feedback to therapists, caregivers, and relatives about the evolution of the status, behavior and habits of each monitored user. The proposed system is part of the EU project BackHome and it is currently running in three end-user’s homes in Belfast. The overall experience in applying the system to monitor and assist people with severe disabilities will be illustrated and lessons learnt discussed.

Research efforts have improved Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology in many ways and numerous applications have been prototyped. Motivated by the aim of restoring independence to individuals with severe disabilities, the focus has centred on developing applications for communication, movement control, environmental control, locomotion, as well as neurorehabilitation. Until recently, these BCI systems have been researched almost exclusively in laboratories. The EU project BackHome was aimed at moving BCIs from being laboratory devices for able-bodies users toward practical devices used at home by people with severe limited mobility. BackHome aimed to develop BCI systems into practical multimodal ATs to provide useful solutions for communication, Web access, leisure, cognitive stimulation and environmental control, and to provide this technology for home usage with minimal support. This talk presents the main outcomes of the BackHome project: (i) a modular and distributed architecture able to meet the requirements of a multi-functional BCI with remote home support; (ii) a novel BCI equipment with practical electrodes aimed at setting a new standard of lightness, autonomy, comfort and reliability; (iii) easy-to-use software tailored to people's needs to manage a complete range of multifunctional applications finely tuned for one-click command and adaptive usage; (iv) a telemonitoring and home support system to remotely monitor and assist BCI independent use; and (v) a Web-based application for therapists which offers remote services to plan and monitor BCI-based cognitive rehabilitation and pervasively assess the use of the system and the quality of life of the individual.

Decline in daily functioning usually involves the reduction and discontinuity in daily routines; entailing a considerable decrease of the quality of life (QoL). This is especially relevant for people that need assistance, as for instance elderly or disabled people and may also hide pathological (e.g., Alzheimer) and/or mental (e.g., depression or melancholia) conditions. Thus, there is the need to intelligent systems able to monitor users' activities to detect emergencies, recognize activities, send notifications, and provide a summary of all the relevant information. In this paper, we present a sensor-based telemonitoring system that addresses all that issues. Its goal is twofold: (i) helping and supporting people (e.g., elderly or disabled) at home; and (ii) giving a feedback to therapists, caregivers, and relatives about the evolution of the status, behavior and habits of each monitored user. Some features of the system have been evaluated with two health-users in Barcelona and results show good performance. Finally, the system has been adopted and installed in several end-users' homes under the umbrella of the projects SAAPHO and BackHome.

In this paper, we present a solution that relies on telemonitoring and home support and that use context-aware techniques to be personalized and adaptable to users' needs. People going back to home after a discharge needs to come back to their normal life. Unfortunately, it becomes very difficult for people with severe disabilities, such as a traumatic brain injury. Thus, this kind of users needs, from the one hand, a telemonitoring system that allows therapists and caregivers to be aware about their status and, from the other hand, home support to be helped in performing their daily activities. In this paper, we present the telemonitoring and home support system developed within the BackHome project. The system relies on sensors to gather all the information coming from user's home. This information is used to keep informed the therapist through a suitable web application, namely Therapist Station, and to automatically assess quality of life as well as to provide context-awareness. Preliminary results in recognizing activities and in assessing quality of life are presented.

Telemonitoring and home support in BackHome

In this paper, we are interested in monitoring mobility activities in order to automatically assess quality of life of people. In particular, we are aimed at answering to the question ``\emph{Today, how was your ability to move about?}''. To this end, we rely on a sensor-based telemonitoring and home support system. Although we are interested in assisting disabled people, we performed preliminary experiments with a healthy user, as a proof of concept. Results show that the approach is promising. Thus, we are now in the process to install the system in disabled people's homes under the umbrella of the BackHome project.

Unhealthy alimentary behaviours and physical inactivity habits are key risk factors for major non communicable diseases. Several researches demonstrate that juvenile obesity can lead to serious medical conditions, pathologies and have important psycho-social consequences. PEGASO is a multidisciplinary project aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles among teenagers through assistive technology. The core of this project is represented by the ICT system, which allows providing tailored interventions to the users through their smartphones in order to motivate them. The novelty of this approach consists of developing a Virtual Individual Model (VIM) for user characterization, which is based on physical, functional and behavioural parameters opportunely selected by experts. These parameters are digitised and updated thanks to the user monitoring through smartphone; data mining algorithms are applied for the detection of activity and nutrition habits and this information is used to provide personalised feedback. The user interface will be developed using gamified approaches and integrating serious games to effectively promote health literacy and facilitate behaviour change.

In BackHome we focus on the definition and provision of cognitive rehabilitation tasks to people with neurological disorders going back to home after a discharge. Those tasks will be executed through a Brain-Neural Computer Interface system and will consist of desktop-based serious games. By now, two games have been implemented: the “memory cards” game, aimed at improving memory skills, and the “find a category” game, aimed at improving attention-and-perception skills. The implemented games are currently under testing at the end-users facilities, in Belfast and Wüurzburg.
