The document provides a media evaluation of a student's horror film project. It discusses how the film challenged conventions of the genre through POV shots of the killer. It represents teenagers going on a camping trip like in films such as "Shrooms" where things go wrong. The intended audience is those who enjoy horror movies ages 15 and up. Technologies like computers and editing software made the project easier than 50 years ago. Working in a group, roles included director, co-director, actors, and the "bad guy."
2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? in our media video we have challenged other media concepts that are in other horror films, such as using POV shots like in the film ‘Halloween’ where Michael Myers is going round the house butchering his family. this is the opening shot of Halloween 1978. I also think that we have linked the film with other horror films because we have the only girl being killed in our film, because in most films you have the girl being killed and the only person left is the ‘looser’ or the ‘Nobody’. We have shown shots of the ‘Bad Guy’ in our film and have shown them as ‘POV’ shots so you cant tell what this person would look like, and also shown it to be like you are the murderer of the film. Films such as Jaws have also done this type of shot, because what they are trying to do is hide the character so you don’t know what is terrorising the area, and so it would be a surprise.
3. how does your media product represent particular social groups? Well in our media products we have a bunch of teenagers going out for a camping weekend, to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city life, and thought they would see what it would be like in the country, this sort of concept is like the one off of ‘shrooms’. As in shrooms the teenagers who have gone on a camping weekend, they do stuff which they shouldn’t do, and then things happen which isn't good, also other films that have this concept is, ‘Friday the 13th’ where teens go to a deserted camp, and then find out somebody wants to kill them, in most films this is what happens and it is always the teenagers that get killed, but there is always one person who is left and that person is the, stereotypical ‘geek’.
4. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? There are 3 steps in media distribution, and these are production, distribution and exhibition. First you have your production company such as warner bros and these produce and make the films and then you have your distribution, which would mean you have the likes of UIP which stands for the United International Pictures and these have to make a copy of the film for each of the different cinema’s in the world, and then when they have done all of this and it has been out at the cinema for a while they have to exhibition it by bringing it onto DVD and have t make a copy of this for each DVD. After the film is on DVD they make copies for the satellites so they can show it on the television.
5. Who would be the audience for your media product? The preferred audience for our media product would have to be people who really enjoy there horror movies, and movies like ‘shrooms’ and ‘cabin fever’. I also think that it would appear best to 15+ age because 15 is the certificate that we are going to give the film. People who enjoy spooky on the edge of their seat slashers would love this film.
6. How did you attract your audience? We have tried to attract our audiences by using all the codes and conventions of a well known horror film, which is Halloween, by using POV shots and showing the girl being killed first and always being one survivor being left.
7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process and constructing this media product? By making this media product in the world of today, I think that it is a lot easier than what it would have been like because we have all this new technology such as computers and the software on the computers. 50 years ago you wouldn’t have been able to do this and you would have to try and film it right or this sort of editing would have taken ages.
8. Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full project? I have made a better film altogether because I feel like I have shot better shots and been more professional with all of the lighting and the better scripts which we made, made it feel more professional. We could make things more believable such as a more brutal storyline, also better editing skills.
9. If you worked in a group, what was each persons role? Elliot wood-Director Will Brett-Co Director and Bad guy Beckitebb-Actress Jacob Haldsworth-Actor
