This is a photo of Michael Phelps in the London 2012
Olympics winning his gold in swimming. A very large
telephoto lens has been used to get up and close to
the swimmer. The camera would have had a fast
shutter speed as well as a large aperture as this
would have caught the large amount of photos that
were taken in a clear and sharp image as the
movement of the model would have been very fast.
The lighting in the room would have been artificial as
the swimming pool was indoors.
Interpretation of meaning
The expression on Phelps's face shows that
swimming in the Olympics isn’t an easy sport and
that it takes a lot of physical and mental strength to
succeed in this sport. Due to the position he is with
his body coming out of the water, we can see that it
take a great amount of strength in his upper body to
get himself in this position and not just any athlete
could do this.
Tom Jenkins is a British photographer who works for the Guardian
taking photos for the sport section. He is renown for taking
photographs of extraordinary moments in popular sporting
events such as the Olympics, The Ashes Tournament and The
Rugby Grand Finals. The purpose of his photos are to be
advertised in the Guardian newspaper and to advertise well
known sport events.

2. Image analysis
Once again a telephoto lens would have been
used to capture this image from a distance.
The camera had a fast shutter speed and a
small aperture to capture the movement of
the Manchester City players celebrating their
victory. Tom Jenkins would have specifically
known that Manchester City were possibly
going to win the league with this match and
therefore prepared in advanced for the
celebration. The lighting would have been
natural as it was inside a large open stadium.
Interpretation of meaning
The facial expression on the Manchester City
players show that they were elated by their
victory over QPR in the last game of the season,
they won the match last minute and therefore
won the league which only emphasis the
expression on their faces.

3. Image analysis
The camera used for this photograph
would have had a large lens with a good
clear zoom on it. The camera would have
had a small aperture and a fast shutter
speed to capture to fast movement of the
athlete running.
Interpretation of meaning
The position of the athlete with his
hand on his chest is to show his
respect for the recent Boston
bombings. His facial expression
emphasis the strain and commitment
a person needs to run a marathon.
