5. overview
The use of libraries is changing rapidly and their
purpose is evolving. More mobile and collaborative
work patterns among students, faculty, and staff – and
their use of devices – create new needs. New access
paradigms, media, and sources require new services.
Innovative approaches to teaching, learning, and
research call for new kinds of support.
As libraries move from places to organize, store, and
retrieve information to places where you can also
create, share, refine, and display it, there must be
approaches to understanding, envisioning, and
planning for the needs of their users. Libraries must
plan space, support services, and technology in an
integrated way to meet and anticipate needs, even as
they change.

Library users are increasingly mobile, empowered by new
technologies and new attitudes about how they learn, teach,

More project-based learning is enabling students to play a
more active role in their own learning, with planned activities
inside and outside of the classroom, depending on needs.

No longer places to simply access information, libraries are
increasingly places where it is created, and in new forms that
are interactive and media-rich.

Enabled new ideas of sharing, new ways to coordinate, and
economic or environmental pressures, we’re moving from a

In order provide the flexibility to accommodate user needs
even as they change, libraries are creating more versatile
spaces and a greater variety of spaces, enabling more choice.

To better support their users, libraries are moving toward
services that are more integrated and mobile while
complementing these with more virtual support.

Library collections are becoming more collective (emphasizing
consortia and collaboration), more special / unique, and more
responsive, curated on-demand – often in multiple formats.
