The human spinal column, or vertebral column, is made up of 33 vertebrae stacked on top of one another. It is divided into 5 regions - 7 cervical vertebrae in the neck, 12 thoracic vertebrae in the upper back, 5 lumbar vertebrae in the lower back, 5 fused sacral vertebrae in the pelvis, and 4 fused coccygeal vertebrae in the tailbone. The vertebrae are separated by intervertebral discs that act as shock absorbers and allow the spine flexibility.
