  1. Welcome to the training module on Molex High Definition Multimedia Interface Connector System. This training module explains the features and benefits of Molex’s HDMI connector system.
  2. The High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) has emerged as the data transmission standard for HDTV and other consumer electronics. It’s the uncompressed, all-digital interface that delivers both dazzling quality and unmatched ease of use. The HDMI is provided for transmitting digital television audio visual signals from DVD players, set-top boxes and other audiovisual sources to television sets, projectors and other video displays. The HDMI can carry high quality multi-channel audio data and can carry all standard and high-definition consumer electronics video formats. HDMI also has the ability to protect data from piracy.
  3. When looking at the differences, HDMI and DVI actually have more in common then differences. They are both all digital, they also are all based on similar specifications since HDMI was derived from the DVI specification. There are three basic differences between HDMI and DVI-D. First, HDMI supports higher resolutions than DVI; second, DVI only connects video, audio connection must be done separately, while HDMI connects both audio and video; third, HDMI connector is far smaller than DVI’s. Another important difference is that DVI standard was developed to be used by PCs, while HDMI was developed to be used by consumer electronics products. It is interesting to notice that HDMI is fully compatible with DVI-D.
  4. Since HDMI is transmitting digital data without compression, it eliminates signal interference and attenuation usually required for traditional connection standards. Molex's High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connectors and cable assemblies provide an uncompressed digital link between consumer electronics equipment such as DVD players, set-top boxes and audio/video monitors such as plasma display screens for high-definition TVs. The HDMI connector system is a small, user-friendly interconnect that can provide up to 5 Gigabits/second of bandwidth to support video and multi-channel audio in a single cable. Leaf-style terminal design allows for 10,000 mating cycles. The connectors are fully shielded for ESD protection, gold-plated for reliability and produced with 100% lead-free processing. Molex’s HDMI connectors and cable assemblies are compliant with the version 1.3 specification of HDMI.

Since HDMI supports any TV or PC video format, including standard, enhanced, and high definition video, and up to 8 channels of digital audio connection, Molex’s HDMI connector system is designed to provide simple digital link for consumer electronics devices, such as DVD players, set-top boxes and audio/video monitors such as plasma display screens for high-definition TVs.

Key features and benefits of the Molex HDMI connector system include: friction-lock design that offers smooth insertion and secure retention; user-friendly design that blends in with today's consumer electronic equipment; mechanical design enabling high speed serial signal transmission; fully shielded for ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection; and HDMI-DVI cables allow for DVI (Digital Video Interface) backward compatibility. Molex’s HDMI cable assemblies are offered in both HDMI-to-HDMI styles for true digital connectivity, and HDMI-to-DVI versions to accommodate the transition of equipment still using DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connectors. They are fully backward compatible with DVI.
  7. Molex’s HDMI PCB headers are HDMI type A connectors, which have 19 pins with bandwidth to support all SDTV, EDTV, and HDTV modes. They are available with or without a panel-mounting flange. The mounting flanges provide additional grounding, protection of solder joints, and screw panel-mounting. The wide solder tabs ensure secure PCB retention. Grounding fingers provide electrical and mechanical stability. Besides the standard 19 circuit PCB receptacles, Molex also has a receptacle with a reduced footprint, saving up to 28% of PCB real estate.

Molex’s HDMI cable assemblies are offered in both HDMI-to-HDMI styles for true digital connectivity, and HDMI-to-DVI versions to accommodate the transition of equipment still using DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connectors. The cable assemblies offered in several standard lengths up to 20 meters. An easy-to-use friction lock design blends in well with home entertainment equipment while providing secure electrical contact and smooth cable insertion/extraction.
