library .
The non-fiction bookshelves line
the walls of the library.
Student work is displayed on top
of the bookshelves.
The picture books are stored in
the bookshelves surrounding the
Story Time Area.
Comfy Reading Area and Vertical File

 The comfy reading area consists of a colorful rug and four
soft bean bag chairs. The students are allowed to pick a
book and read quietly in the area.
The vertical file is a unique part of the media center. It was
started by the first media specialist at the school. It contains
a variety of resources organized by subject matter.
Positive Survey Results
 All teachers surveyed listed the computer lab as the best
  feature in the media center.
 Words that were used in the survey to describe the library
were fun, inviting, and very organized.
 The teachers also enjoy all the resources available to them
  and the Teacher Workroom.
 The students surveyed also listed the computer lab as their
favorite feature in the media center.
 The students also enjoy the morning news segment.
 The students love story time with the media specialist and the
  comfy reading area.
 Several students like being able to take AR tests in the library
as well as their names being displayed when they do well.
Negative Survey Results
 Teachers and students both expressed a desire to have the fiction
  collection updated.
 The students would like to have a larger comfy reading area.
 The teachers think that there are too many smaller tables and would like
to see them replaced with larger tables to de-clutter the area and allow
more room for the students to walk around.
 The media specialist would like an area where the students could sit
while she reads to them. She says that when they gather in front of her
while she reads, they tend to be too crowded together.
 Both the media specialist and teachers also think that the media center
could use brighter lights, the current lights are dull.
 Most every teacher would like to see a SMART Board in the media
center so that they could teach lessons in there. It could also be used for
  faculty meetings.
Improvements
 Problem: Teachers and students feel like the fiction
  books need to be updated
 Solution: Proceeds raised from the school store will
be used to purchase new fiction books
Improvements
 Problem: Comfy reading area is too small
 Solution: Add a larger rug, more pillows, and expand the area

Media Center Policies
Euchee Creek Library does not have a separate
media center handbook. It adheres to the Columbia
County policies. I agree with all of the policies,
therefore I would not make any changes.
Key:
  White print-Columbia County’s policy
Yellow Print- Euchee Creek’s interpretation of the
  policy
Media Center Policies
A. Accessibility
Local Board of Education policies and accreditation standards dictate that accessibility of the media center be
provided for both individual students and groups simultaneously throughout the instructional day
during each day of the school year. (Georgia Accrediting Standards, Educational Practices Reference
     Guide, 2010 AdvancED,formerly SACS).
The school library media specialist organizes and facilitates a physical environment designed specifically to
meet the learning and information needs of students, teachers, and others with a variety of educational
and informational resources that provide access to information both within the school and in the local,
     regional, and global communities.
Euchee Creek’s Library Hours are 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m, 180 days a year. The media specialist uses the Media
     Center Passes system which is:
Student passes are designed to help keep students on task so that classroom instructional time is not wasted.
The following individual student passes are used for visits to the Media Center. Whenever a student
comes to the media center without an adult, he should have his yellow library card with him for
safety/identification procedures, as well as for checkout.
School Store (green) 5 minutes -- 8:00-8:25 a.m. / Limited to one visit per week.
Free Reading (blue) 15-20 minutes -- For enrichment including individual reading or hands-on activities.
Accelerated Reader Quiz (red) 5-10 minutes.
     Checkout (orange) 5-10 minutes.
Special Needs (white -- hand written by teacher)
-- Group of students working together
     -- Internet use
-- Student without identification (yellow library card)
Media Center Policies
C. Scheduling & Collaborative Planning
1. The media specialist is responsible for the management of space, equipment,
resources, and supplies for all library media programs and services.
Reference: Information Power, Building Partnerships for Learning, American
Association of School Librarians, 1998.
2. Flexible access to the library media programs and services shall be maintained
as stated in State Rule 160-4-4-.01 Media Programs - a plan for flexibly
scheduled media center access for students and teachers in groups or as
individuals simultaneously throughout each instructional day. Accessibility shall
refer to the facility, the staff, and the resources and shall be based on
instructional need.
3. Collaboration shall include joint planning by media specialist and teachers to
ensure that the use of media center resources and services support on-going
classroom instruction and implementation of the state-adopted curriculum.
Scheduling and Collaboration: Each class will have a 15 minute check-out time. Media specialist
will collaborate with the classroom teacher to promote authentic learning of media skills and
information literacy as well as incorporating technology correctly to promote creative
thinking. The students will also have a 45 minute "specials" time every 18 day rotation.
Media Center Policies
Criteria for Selection of Instructional Media
The following criteria shall be used as they apply:
Instructional media shall support and be consistent with the general educational goals
of the state and the district and the aims and objectives of individual schools and
specific courses.
Instructional media shall be chosen to enrich and support the curriculum and the
personal needs of users.
Instructional media shall meet high standards in:
• Artistic quality and/or literary style
• Authenticity
• Educational significance
• Factual content
• Physical format
• Presentation
• 24
• Readability
• Technical quality
Media Center Policies
Selection Process
The media center collection consists of a variety of materials
that are selected to support the school’s curriculum and
enrich the lives of our children. The following review sources
are among those used by the media specialist on a continuing
   basis throughout the selection process:
   - School Library Journal and other professional journals
   - Awards: Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott
King Award, Georgia Children's Picture Storybook Award, and
   Georgia Children's Book Award
   - Recommendations from teachers and students
   - Publishers’ lists of recommended titles
   - Preview of materials supplied by reputable vendors
Media Center Policies
Circulation Policy

3 books per student (1 book for kindergarten until second
   semester)
Two week checkout period with 3 renewals -- no overdue fines.
Damage fees or replacement costs charged for damaged or lost
   books.
$1.00 charge for lost or damaged library card.
Circulation limits are designed to help students handle their
responsibilities with success. Lower grade levels may begin with
one book and increase the number as children gain maturity. Most
parents seem to appreciate this safeguard which helps reduce the
problem of lost books. These general policies may be modified to
meet specific student needs, usually at the request of the teacher.

  • 27. Media Center Policies Euchee Creek Library does not have a separate media center handbook. It adheres to the Columbia County policies. I agree with all of the policies, therefore I would not make any changes. Key: White print-Columbia County’s policy Yellow Print- Euchee Creek’s interpretation of the policy
  • 28. Media Center Policies A. Accessibility Local Board of Education policies and accreditation standards dictate that accessibility of the media center be provided for both individual students and groups simultaneously throughout the instructional day during each day of the school year. (Georgia Accrediting Standards, Educational Practices Reference Guide, 2010 AdvancED,formerly SACS). The school library media specialist organizes and facilitates a physical environment designed specifically to meet the learning and information needs of students, teachers, and others with a variety of educational and informational resources that provide access to information both within the school and in the local, regional, and global communities. Euchee Creek’s Library Hours are 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m, 180 days a year. The media specialist uses the Media Center Passes system which is: Student passes are designed to help keep students on task so that classroom instructional time is not wasted. The following individual student passes are used for visits to the Media Center. Whenever a student comes to the media center without an adult, he should have his yellow library card with him for safety/identification procedures, as well as for checkout. School Store (green) 5 minutes -- 8:00-8:25 a.m. / Limited to one visit per week. Free Reading (blue) 15-20 minutes -- For enrichment including individual reading or hands-on activities. • 29. Media Center Policies C. Scheduling & Collaborative Planning 1. Reference: Information Power, Building Partnerships for Learning, American Association of School Librarians, 1998. 2. Flexible access to the library media programs and services shall be maintained as stated in State Rule 160-4-4-.01 Media Programs - a plan for flexibly scheduled media center access for students and teachers in groups or as individuals simultaneously throughout each instructional day. Accessibility shall refer to the facility, the staff, and the resources and shall be based on instructional need. 3. Collaboration shall include joint planning by media specialist and teachers to ensure that the use of media center resources and services support on-going classroom instruction and implementation of the state-adopted curriculum. Scheduling and Collaboration: Each class will have a 15 minute check-out time. Media specialist will collaborate with the classroom teacher to promote authentic learning of media skills and information literacy as well as incorporating technology correctly to promote creative thinking. The students will also have a 45 minute "specials" time every 18 day rotation.
  • 30. • 31. Media Center Policies Selection Process The media center collection consists of a variety of materials that are selected to support the school’s curriculum and enrich the lives of our children. The following review sources are among those used by the media specialist on a continuing basis throughout the selection process: - School Library Journal and other professional journals - Awards: Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott King Award, Georgia Children's Picture Storybook Award, and Georgia Children's Book Award - Recommendations from teachers and students - Publishers’ lists of recommended titles - Preview of materials supplied by reputable vendors
  • 32. Media Center Policies Circulation Policy 3 books per student (1 book for kindergarten until second semester) Two week checkout period with 3 renewals -- no overdue fines. Damage fees or replacement costs charged for damaged or lost books. $1.00 charge for lost or damaged library card. Circulation limits are designed to help students handle their responsibilities with success. Lower grade levels may begin with one book and increase the number as children gain maturity. Most parents seem to appreciate this safeguard which helps reduce the problem of lost books. These general policies may be modified to meet specific student needs, usually at the request of the teacher.
