This document discusses visualizing urban metabolism and energy use. It summarizes that over 50% of energy use is influenced by urban planning and design. It then presents data on energy use breakdown by sector in the UK in 2010. Various factors that affect energy consumption are examined, including building form, urban form, urban climate, density, deprivation, housing typology. Maps and data from London, Barcelona, Madrid and other cities are shown regarding final domestic energy use and its relationship to these urban characteristics. The urban heat island effect is also analyzed in relation to density and land use.
