SHIFT #1: “DIGITAL NATIVES”

From this … … to this?
 EDUC W200 Week 2
WHEN SHIFTS COLLIDE

• Standards and accountability
• Last week, we talked about students (so-called
  “digital natives”)
• Now, let’s talk about administrators, authorities, etc.
• You are in the middle.

 EDUC W200 Week 2
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (NCLB)

EDUC W200 Week 2
KEY ELEMENTS OF NCLB

• States must develop their own accountability systems
     (largely standardized tests).
• Schools must make “adequate yearly progress” in
standardized test scores. (Those that don’t are put on a
published list of “failing schools,” and parents can
transfer their students to another school.)
• All teachers must be “highly qualified” (by 2005).
• Schools must use “scientifically based” practices and
     methods.
• Students must be “technology-literate” by eighth grade.

    EDUC W200 Week 2
NCLB & ACADEMIC STANDARDS

• Main reasons for academic standards …
  • To make sure students are learning what they’re supposed
to learn at a particular level
  • To clearly measure student outcomes

o “The standards-based education reform, setting high
standards and establishing measurable goals will improve
    students’ outcomes”
o “Whatever each state decides students will learn, each
school must prove that students are learning it.”

 EDUC W200 Week 2
OBAMA AND NCLB

• The greater push is to hold schools accountable for
  student test scores
  o Assessing student performance
• Indiana granted NCLB Waiver (May 2012)
• What does this mean for Indiana?

 EDUC W200 Week 2
EDUC W200 Week 2
TECHNOLOGY IN
STANDARDS-BASED EDUCATION

• Administrators, parents and students have
expectations about technology use in the classroom
• Your students need to meet state standards
• It is important for you to know how to integrate
technology into your classroom based on the
  standards
• This is what w200 is all about!

 EDUC W200 Week 2
SOLUTIONS…

• But what about individualized learning and
customized learning? How can you meet the
  standards and your students’ needs?
• Webquests are one solution.

Notas do Editor

  1. How did the teacher in the class-prep video characterize “digital natives” and “digital immigrants”? Do you believe that there’s a difference? Would you consider yourself a native or an immigrant?
  2. NCLB is a 2001 act of Congress that supports standards-based education reform. It requires states to set academic standards and to assess basic skills in order to receive federal funding.
  3. Here are some of the main goals● Performance Goal 1: By SY 2013-14, all students will reach high standards, at a minimum attaining proficiency or better in reading/language arts and mathematics. ● Performance Goal 2: All limited English proficient students will become proficient in English and reach high academic standards, at a minimum attaining proficiency or better in reading/language arts and mathematics. ● Performance Goal 3: By SY 2005-06, all students will be taught by highly qualified teachers. ● Performance Goal 4: All students will be educated in learning environments that are safe, drug free, and conducive to learning. Performance Goal 5: All students will graduate from high school
  4. We’ve talked about the pressures from students and meeting their interests and translating the information to their digital language. Now, another place you’ll feel pressure from is administration and policy makers. You need to meet these standards. Our school’s success depends on it. Some teachers have fallen to this pressure and simply teach to the test and teaching them how to take tests. This isn’t measuring our effectiveness as teachers and this isn’t the intent or purpose of NCLB. We need to increase our effectiveness and how can we do that? By translating our language to meet those of our students. Technology can help us address these problems – and help our students meet these standards by adjusting our methods to meet individual students’ needs.
  5. Individualized LearningStudents learn at their own pace so that they do not have to move onto the next topic without mastering the current topic. Forcing them move onto the next topic will only worsen their academic performance. Customized LearningStudents have a variety of choices that can suit their needs and interests.
