2. Creating an academic image
collection with Flickr (we hope)
Mark Dahl
Jeremy McWilliams
Lewis & Clark College
4. The need
Lack of digital collections representing contemporary
ceramics images
Sources for creating this type of collection are not
centralized--they are artists dispersed around the world
5. The model: submissions
Ceramics artists are invited to contribute images by a curatorial
board
They create flickr accounts, upload images
They use our site to
'catalog' their images
assign Creative Commons License
submit to our flickr group
Curatorial board juries the submissions and accepts/rejects
images to group
6. The model: collection users
A (fancy) collection site will facilitate browsing the collection by
various controlled fields
Prospective users
artists
educators in the ceramic arts
art historians,
art patrons
The Flickr presence will also be important for tagging,
comments, etc. to reach a broader audience
7. Why?
API - allows customized UI (fall back on existing ui)
Submission/image management tools
Tools for slideshows, various image sizes, etc.
Groups business logic
tags/machine tags
Copyright facilities (Creative Commons Licenses)
Network effects/social web/web 2.0
community
comments
tagging
web scale
We can drop out of the process if needed
8. Technical Specs
PHP, with phpflickr class
JQuery for dazzling effects
Database layer is flickr...contains all images & metadata
