Guatemala is in Central America, Mexico is to the North, Belize to the northeast,
Honduras to the southeast and El Salvador to the south with 248 miles of coastline.
      Capital = Guatemala City
      Nationality = Guatemalan
      Religion = Roman Catholic, Protestant, Mayan
      Population = 13,55,440 people
      Official Language = Spanish, but have 20 indigenous languages still spoken
      Sport = soccer
      Money = Quetzal- named after national bird --> la Quetzal
      Climate = Very hot and humid March- April and rain May through October
                      -tropical

History: Republic of Guatemala
       *12,000 BC = Pre Columbian Era : have evidence of human existence
       * 1591 = Colonial Period - this is when exploration of Guatemala started
       * 1821 = Post Independence - September 15, 2010 is Independence Day
                             ( From Spain)

Economy:
      -Dependant on coffee, sugar and bananas
      -illegal drugs = big transit country
      - money laundering
      - human trafficking

Food:
        - tortillas
        -black beans
        -beef broth soup
        -typical breakfast : beans, eggs, bread and coffee
        - The food is different in Guatemala than in Mexico, it is less spicy and chilies are
                         served on the side.
Tourist:
        - Volcanoes: still active and can see red lava- Volcan de Pacaya
        - Mayan Ruins in Tikal
        -Monterrico beach in Guatemala city
        -Aguateca city - can find archeologists working
Shopping:
        -Open markets
        - Rum " Ron Zacapa Centenario"
        - Hand made fabrics
                 - huipiles ( whi-peel) a blouse, skirts are popular too
        -Jade, coffee, cardamom ( spice)

Interesting Facts:
        - Buses are popular for transportation: tourists and locals.
        - very colorful and drivers are aggressive
- members of the military cannot vote
        - Health concerns- illnesses transmitted through food, air and water
               - malaria, leptospirosis
