- Barack Hussein Obama II was elected the 44th president of the United States on November 4, 2008.
- On August 4 of 1961 Barack Hussein Obama II was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Mrs. Stanley Dunham and a Mr. Barack Obama Sr. He is the first president to have been born in Hawaii.
- Obama later began his college career at Occidental College located in Los Angeles, California. He attended this college from 1979 till 1981.
- After attending Occidental College in California, Obama then transferred to Columbia University in Manhattan in New York City. He attended Columbia from 1981 to 1983 when he graduated with a B.A. in political science with a specialty in international relations.
- A few years later, Barack Obama attended Harvard Law School starting in 1988 and graduating in 1991 with a Harvard Law degree. He graduated with a Juris Doctor magna cum laude. During his time there he served as the editor of the Harvard Law Review.
- After college, Obama’s political career began when he was elected as Illinois State Senator 3 times and served from 1997 to 2004.
- After serving as a state Senator he went on to become elected as a U.S. Senator. He served this role from January 4, 2005 through November 16, 2008.
- On February 10, 2007 Barack Obama officially announced his candidacy for President. He did so in Springfield, Illinois.
- A little over a year later on May 31, 2008 Obama resigned his 20-year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago due to immense controversy surrounding it. This was in effort to gain support from more followers.
- After months and months of campaigning for the Democratic nomination, on June 3, 2008, the final day of the primary race, Obama drew enough superdelegates to win the Democratic nomination. With this victory he became the first black candidate to lead a major party ticket. His opponent, Hillary Clinton refused to concede.
- Soon after, on June 7 Hillary Clinton conceded the Democratic nomination and elected to endorse Barack Obama.
- On June 19 he announced he would opt out of the public financing system. This action made him the first modern-day presidential candidate to reject using taxpayer dollars for his general election campaign.
- An important decision had to be made by Obama shortly before the Democratic National Convention. This decision was to determine ‘who would be his running mate?’. August 23, 2008 was the day Obama took on Joe Biden as his vice presidential running mate in his pursuit of U.S. President.
- From August 25 to August 27, Obama attended the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado at Invesco Field.
- Following the DNC, Barack Obama officially received the nomination for President on August 28, 2008.
- With the nomination for President, Obama had to go head to head with Republican candidate John McCain. His first face-to-face debate came on September 26, 2008 in Oxford, Mississippi. This debate focused on foreign policy, national security and, due to the current financial crisis, economic issues.
- Their second debate was held on October 7 in Nashville, Tennessee with a more open format.
- Their third and final debate was held on October 15 in Hempstead, New York with a focus on domestic and economic policy.
- Sealing the deal on this historic journey, Barack Obama won the Presidential Election on November 4, 2008. He won with a final electoral vote tally of 365 to 173 and a popular vote of 52.9% to 45.7%. This victory marked the first time in United States history that an African-American would become the President of the United States.
- Following his historic win came his victory speech, which was given in Chicago’s Grant Park in front of hundreds of thousands of supporters.
- Culminating this boundary shattering event, Barack Obama was sworn in to presidency on January 20, 2009 at the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C.
