WRITING 4.0: Documented Inquiry Project: Novel Analysis English 1302 Spring 2015 Synopsis of the Task. As noted on the assignment sheet for Writing #3.0, your fourth project of the term is your documented study: a paper that centers on a question worthy of academic research. This particular paper will focus on analysis of a novel that you selected. The paper will be six to eight pages (double spaced) long, not counting the abstract, annotated bibliography, (see “Ancillaries” below) or your works cited page. There is no one way you are required to analyze your novel, but the research paper must contain some kind of analysis, and that analysis should be the focal point of paper. This analysis could critical, evaluative, comparative, or some combination thereof. As long as it is analysis based on evidence both from the text itself and outside academic sources, it will work for the paper. You may wish to use one or more of the modes of literary criticism that we have discussed in class. Keep in mind, plot synopsis may be part of the paper, but it can take up no more than a paragraph in the paper if you use a dedicated plot synopsis section. Any paper that is mostly plot synopsis, or simply a report of information gathered about the novel, can receive a grade no higher than a 70. Ancillaries. Besides the text itself, you will create an annotated bibliography based on the tentative list of works to be used you wrote for Writing 3.0, and you will also create an abstract, which should be about one paragraph in length. The rough drafts of the annotated bibliography and the abstract will be revised into a final draft for this paper. The annotated bibliography and abstract are required parts of this assignment. Other things will also be due along the way the rest of the semester: notes for me to check, revisions, and an oral presentation of your final paper to the class. Each of these is part of the entire assignment; without them, your final grade for Writing 4.0 will suffer. Format. The paper should be typed or word-processed, double spaced, and can include headings. For any other questions about using tables or surveys, please consult the writing center, any of the MLA help websites we have discussed, our textbooks, or myself. Page numbers are required for this paper, and should be placed in the upper right hand corner of each page. Documentation and Sources. Once again, MLA will be the citation system that you use for this assignment. As far as numbers of sources to consider for a paper of this length, 6-8 reputable, academic sources would be appropriate. Direct use of Wikipedia as a source will not be permitted. Sites such as About.com, Sparknotes, Shmoop, and other “homework/study” sites will not be permitted. General dictionaries and encyclopedias will also not be permitted. Copies of Quoted and Paraphrased Pages. When you turn in the f.

ENG2150 - Assignment 2 1 Assignment 2: Research-Based Argument Essay (Part 2) • Word count: 2,800-3,100 words / ~ 8-9 double-spaced pages • Font 11-12, Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, or similar • At least one primary source and four secondary sources • Contains formal references, a bibliography and your Writer’s Letter • Submitted by direct message to me on Slack, by Word Document • Time needed to complete: about 5-6 hours, highly recommended to spread over a few days • Peer-review of first drafts in pairs occurs in Week 13 (May 3rd to 10th) • Due in Week 15, by May 20th at the latest (this is a strict deadline, due to the deadline I’m given for submitting final course grades) Description So, here we are: your final project! This is the completed research-based argument essay that you have already worked on substantially by completing Assignment 1, your rhetorical analysis. This exercise is fundamental: you’ll be asked to write argumentative essays very frequently in college. It’s also an amazing skill to have for your future life: you’ll know how to efficiently analyze any material, critically question things that are presented as truths to you, and you’ll know how to make a powerful, professionally back-up argument. It doesn’t have to be tedious: by following the step-by-step method you started for Assignment 1, you have already spread out the work. Hopefully you’ve chosen a topic and a medium that you’re deeply interested in, so that you find enjoyment in your project. Topping up the research you’ve done for Assignment 1 with the two additional Reflective Annotated Bibliography sheets from Week 12, you may note that your thesis changes slightly, or your topic framing or approach shifts. That’s complete fine and normal: it shows you’ve deepened your reflection since first working on your topic, receiving feedback from me and your peers, and it also allows you to update the research angle you’re interested in exploring with this final project. An academic will frequently take weeks or even months to complete a peer-reviewed article like the ones you used for your RefAnnBibs, adding ideas, rearranging the structure of their argument, and refining their thesis as they go. Directions As a reminder, to write a complete, well-presented essay, you need four things: a specific topic, selected sources, selected evidence from your sources, and most of all, your own ideas (and a willingness to proofread!). Following is the detailed step-by-step method you’ve already ENG2150 - Assignment 2 2 used for assignment 1. Now, you’re stepping back briefly into step 2 to add your two new RefAnnBibs, a ...

English 1110.01 Spring Semester 2016 Elizabeth Nixon STEP 5: The Analytical Research Paper According to Writing Analytically, writing the Analytical Research Paper is a process that is best conceived of in steps (see Chs. 4-8). The Analytical Research Paper, then, is the culmination of The Analytical Research Project. For the Analytical Research Paper, you have analyzed a primary source relevant to the course topic, and now are ready to formulate a thesis claim about this evidence. Because this assignment emphasizes research undertaken for and communicated to an academic audience, you will integrate your secondary evidence into your analysis. This assignment should be 7-8 pages, double-spaced, typed in 12-point font, and set to 1” margins. Objectives: · Analyze primary sources, what messages they convey in written, visual, and/or audio media. · Explore and make claims about how the messages are conveyed. · Discuss to whom the messages are conveyed and speculate about the effectiveness of this message for a specific audience. · Develop a complex thesis that makes a claim about how a primary source communicates a message to a specific audience. · Introduce complicating evidence and include what Writing Analytically terms an “evolving thesis.” · Demonstrate awareness about your role in the conversation about your research question and thesis by acknowledging what is at stake in your analysis. In other words, explain why your analysis matters. · Integrate secondary sources in a way that accounts for aspects of the academic conversation that are relevant to the paper’s thesis. · Include a title on the first page that reflects the complexity of the paper’s general purposes. · Include proper in-text citations of each source consulted or referred to, including the primary source which you’re analyzing, and an appropriately formatted Works Cited page following MLA guidelines. · Observe the standards of academic writing discussed in class and avoid sentence-level errors and lapses in tone. Produce fluid and precise prose with appropriate transitions throughout. Getting Started: In order to complete a sound Analytical Research Paper, you must engage with sources that will yield complex and compelling thesis claims when analyzed. You might consider these steps in order to get started on this assignment: · Revisit your Secondary Source Analysis and your notes from our conference to determine how to begin your revisions toward a final ARP. · If necessary, do additional research to find primary or secondary evidence to further support and/or complicate your analytical claims. · Be sure that you have a complex thesis and that you are able to support it with evidence. Completing the Assignment: In the previous steps, you have developed analytical claims about the primary evidence, formulated research questions, found appropriate sources, and revised your analysis to integrate secondary evidence. Now you are ready to complete the Analytical Researc ...

Freedom in America Paper Assignment Step 1: Pick a topic. What topic are you most interested in pertaining to this course? What is a topic you would be interested in writing a paper on? Your topic should not be too broad. For example, the Harlem Renaissance, is too broad. Focusing on a specific cause of the downfall of Reconstruction is a possible topic. Step 2: Research the internet and the library for primary sources, or first hand accounts of documents that relate to your topic. Analyze at least at least ONE primary source for your paper, you may use more than 1, but you must use at least 1. Step 3: Analyze. When analyzing your document, thoroughly scrutinize the document, what it says, and the argument. Look through “ Guidelines for Analyzing a Primary Source ” (below) to help you come up with a complete analysis of your primary source(s). Step 4: Choose at least 4 books and/or articles from the library or online journals from the library’s online databases. For journal articles, go to UD’s Library database section. For the databases section, articles on U.S. History can be found through Jstor and Project Muse. *Do not use any encyclopedia sources or the class readings as a secondary source. If you use a website, it must be approved by the Instructor. You may use them as a reference, but these do not count towards your secondary sources. Step 5: Make sure you have a thesis statement . This is the most important sentence in your paper. The thesis should be located in the first paragraph of your paper. The statement should be concise and not too broad. A thesis is the argument or point of view for your paper. It is something that you and someone else can debate . Your thesis statement should start out by stating something such as “This paper argues that...” The thesis statement is the statement that guides you throughout the paper. All of your main ideas should connect to your thesis statement. 1 Step 6: Write your paper! Keep in mind the following: 1) Papers must be typewritten, double-spaced in 12 pt font, and 1-inch margins. Papers should be at least 5 full pages plus a Works Cited page (6 total) and include an introduction, body, and conclusion. 2) You should have a well-articulated thesis . Formulate a central theme that links the primary source document(s) together and connects them to the secondary sources--the books and/or articles you use.. 3) Use the "Guidelines for Analyzing Primary Sources" below as a guide. You do not have to answer every question, but be sure to answer the who/what/where/when/why of the document. Describe the audience for this document. Then move on to your own analysis.... 4) Analyze your documents. What do they tell you about the cultures that created these stories? How do they enhance our knowledge beyond the course readings and material? Can you discern any deeper meanings beyond what is just on the page? What were the motivations for crea ...
