3. 2 Samuel 23 8 These be the names of the mighty
men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in
the seat, chief among the captains; the same was
Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight
hundred, whom he slew at one time. 9 And after
him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one
of the three mighty men with David, when they
defied the Philistines that were there gathered
together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone
away:

arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand
was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and
the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the
people returned after him only to spoil.

When the battle was over, they came back and
helped gather the spoils from the Philistines.

5. 2 Samuel 23:11 And
after him was
Shammah the son of Agee the
Hararite. And the Philistines
were gathered together into a
troop, where was a piece of
ground full of lentiles: and the
people fled from the Philistines. 12 But he stood in the
midst of the ground, and
defended it, and slew the
Philistines: and the LORD
wrought a great victory.
Fight or flight
Will you stand or
will you run?
If we will stand
true, the Lord will
give us victory.
5
6. Some folks say they would stand bravely
if the cause was great enough;
They want to do something big.
But Shammah stood to
defend a field of beans.
The individual battle may seem insignificant,
but the cause is great:
It is the cause of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living
God, Who takes away the sins of the world.
We fight for lost souls to be saved.
6
7. We only have a small church, and just a few folks,
and some say we will never do anything big.
But if we will stand firm, God will give us victory.
We will see our children saved and living as sons
and daughters of the Most High God.
We can see our neighborhood living for Jesus.

8. As Paul taught last Sunday night, God may be
reducing us until only He can get the glory.
In the Power of God, we can do exploits.
Don’t stoop at standing time.
Never give up!
Never back up!
We have God with us.
Stand and pray.

9. When George Washington and the Continental
Army was at Valley Forge, most would have quit.
But they stayed and won a great victory.
9
10. 13 And
three of the thirty chief
went down, and came to David in
the harvest time unto the cave of
Adullam: and the troop of the
Philistines pitched in the valley of
Rephaim. 14 And David was then
in an hold, and the garrison of the
Philistines was then in Bethlehem.
10
11. 15 And
David longed, and
said, Oh that one would give
me drink of the water of the
well of Bethlehem, which is
by the gate! 16 And the three
mighty men brake through
the host of the Philistines,
and drew water out of the
well of Bethlehem, that was
by the gate, and took it, and
brought it to David:
11
12. They loved their king.
David had, perhaps in a moment of weakness,
expressed longing for a drink of that water.
These men who loved him risked their lives to go
through the Philistine lines and bring him a drink.
Love is an action word.
12
13. 16b nevertheless
David would not drink thereof,
but poured it out unto the LORD. 17 And he said,
Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this:
is not this the blood of the men that went in
jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not
drink it. These things did these three mighty men.
David was ashamed of his weakness
and denied himself the water.
He poured it out as an offering unto the Lord.
13
14. Someone might say that David wasted that water
so bravely earned for him.
No offering unto God is wasted.
It’s the best use of all that we have.
Romans 12 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which
is your reasonable service.
All that we have; all that we are.
14
15. 18 And Abishai,
the brother of Joab, the son of
Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up
his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and
had the name among three. 19 Was he not most
honorable of three? therefore he was their captain:
howbeit he attained not unto the first three.
The exploits of this second group of three were not
as great as those of the first three,
But were nevertheless very notable.
Their leader was Abishai, David’s nephew,
brother of Joab, son of David’s sister Zeruiah.
15
16. 20 And
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a
valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts,
he slew two lion-like men of Moab: he went down
also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of
snow: 21 And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man:
and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he
went down to him with a staff, and plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him
with his own spear.
16
17. 22 These
things did Benaiah
the son of Jehoiada, and had
the name among three
mighty men. 23 He was more
honorable than the thirty, but
he attained not to the first
three. And David set him
over his guard.
He fought with a stick against a sword –
And won!
17
18. Verses 24-38 lists the next 30 of
David’s mighty men.
Although they don’t get special mention of
individual exploits, they were mighty men of God.
We have seen today that although we each
have different abilities and gifts,
We can all serve loyally and
bravely in God’s army.
18
19. Let us stand and fight the battle in
our little field of beans.
Don’t wait on some big thing to do;
Do what is before you today.
