50. Etiquette for Wimba Pronto Have some practice sessions with others online before using for key sessions Before beginning an AppShare, shut down or minimise any items which you do not want visible (e.g. Data which is sensitive) Be cautious about using video & appshare simultaneously, as they are both bandwidth intensive. Be aware of users on low strength connections. Arrive early for office hours to ensure that all the technology is working properly, and that you are available at the start of the session. Check that your audio is working well. If students are likely to be in the Waiting Room for a while, consider sending a message saying that it will be a while before you can work with them. Set expectations re: the correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and avoid the use of “text message” speech/acronyms Retain all chat logs, in case one is needed for a grade appeal, etc.

52. Do a search for ‘chatlog’ to identify where these save on your computer.

Notas do Editor
Have you ever used Skype or MSN? Wimba Pronto is an instant messaging system aimed at educational institutions, non-archival. It is installed on all PCs on the King Alfred campus (please contact ITS if your PC doesn’t appear to have it installed). The more people who are using this software, the more functional it becomes. By the end of the session participants will know about:· How to create a Pronto account· How to install Pronto at home· Password Recovery· Customisation (e.g. appearance, status update)· Etiquette for Wimba Pronto· Holding an ‘office hour’This interactive session, aimed at all staff within the university, will focus on both the practical requirements of Pronto, but also offer opportunities to discuss innovative and appropriate situations for use.
Synchronous e-learning, commonly supported by media such as videoconferencing and chat, has the potential to support e-learners in the development of learning communities. Learners and teachers experience synchronous e-learning as more social and avoid frustration by asking and answering questions in real time.Synchronous sessions help e-learners feel like participants rather than isolates:Isolation can be overcome by more continued contact, particularly synchronously, and by becoming aware of themselves as members of a community rather than as isolated individuals communicating with the computer.Asynchronous e-learning, commonly facilitated by media such as e-mail and discussion boards, supports work relations among learners and with teachers, even when participants cannot be online at the same time. It is thus a key component of flexible e-learning. In fact, many people take online courses because of their asynchronous nature, combining education with work, family, and other commitments. Asynchronous e-learning makes it possible for learners to log on to an e-learning environment at any time and download documents or send messages to teachers or peers. Students may spend more time refining their contributions, which are generally considered more thoughtful compared to synchronous communication.

So, where does the group see the benefits of Wimba Pronto so far… (for teaching, for administration). Liz Stuart is going to use it for her office hours, 1 hour a week from September. and yes, we’re getting to the practical stuff now! Which learning groups does it help?
More depth coming on those shortly….
See here, can also alter the courses that you appear in….You can also get to this screen from “Account Settings” under the “Pronto” tab…
I’m always forgetting my password, so this is helpful… just need to have access to your email so that you can use the new email (or ID!).
Can connect with external people (e.g. Lloyd Stock from Wimba) trying to remember how to do this…
Note: we can also add a “Schools” tab, which will contain all of the Helpdesks that have been set up by the institution, e.g. Campus offices, library services, academic counselling, library, student services, registry, etc.

Do you want ‘automatic promotion’ – lets the next person in the call straight in, or do you want to have a bit more control?!E.g. Students have to give a reason why they are queuing up, and you can then promote 3 people with the same query – students can also talk to each other in the queue and may solve the issue before they ever get to you… On leaving “Office Hours”, your status will default to “Available”
If you are getting no response from the student, send a chat message to ask if they can hear you, as obviously...
