1. Textual Analysis – (DJ Fresh - Louder)
As the sequence begins a tracking shot reveals what can be made out to be a hot location
as sun rays hit the screen and palm trees are shown. Silhouettes are also produced by the
suns reflections on the surrounding buildings which creates a mysterious and interesting
scene which attracts the audience. It then cuts to a woman on skates riding through an
urban area as the sun blares down on her. This shot could be a symbol of happiness and
excitement the woman has about the day and the fun she is about to have. Further
analysis can show the symbol; as she begins riding the non diegetic sound from the
singers voice is ‘I can’t control this feeling, there’s something happening inside of me’.
Before the woman is shown in the sequence a long shot of birds flying off a ledge is
pictured, this can convey freedom as birds can do whatever they please as the sky is the
limit. As the shot leads on to the woman skating it could be an inter-textual reference as
she is experiencing freedom. The mise en scene of the clothes that the woman wearing is
also very related to the video as she is wearing a bright blue top. This makes it easier for
the audience to see her and the colour blue could also relate to no limits as the sky is blue.
Her jeans are also very short which could represent how hot it is and the season, this is
later on verified as we see two women riding around on the beach. The second woman
who is later on introduced to the audience is also wearing very short shorts but the colour
of her top is yellow. The mise en scene reference to her costume here is that she may be
conveying the sun and how nice of day it is. Both women are riding around in an urban
area and when the two women cross paths the singers’ non diegetic lyrics say ‘the
chemistry is building’, this can show that the two women are building a relationship as
friends. The pace of editing later on in the sequence is slowed down as the women reach
a group of people that they seem to know. The mise en scene creates a very urban scene
as all of the cast are wearing very bright and unique clothing which makes the scene very
‘cool’ and ‘hip’. The hip atmosphere is further enhanced by the camera shot, the use of
lose ups on various peoples sneakers can portray a very fashionable and again ‘cool’
scene. Finally as the music increases in tempo the editing and pace of cuts increases and
many shots are shown. This builds excitement.
Aspects of this music video are directly relevant to our music video. The way the cast are
dressed in the urban street and hip hop look is what our group were looking to
incorporate in our video. The reason being is that it will be related to the environment
that the video will be shot. Also the bright clothes will light up at night with the natural
lighting from the shops and the night atmosphere will create mystery. The camera will
also be in correspondence like this music video as it adds emphasis on the wording of the
song. Instead of riding around on skateboards and skates we will ride on scooters and this
is more unique and many people do not ride on colourful scooters, it original and is
attractive for the audience who want to watch the video.
