24. Procedure Part I – Physical Gas Absorption (Using water only) Fill the bucket with water. Turn the apparatus on, the pump, CO2and air supply valves. Using the control panel, make the flowrate of CO2 to air 50/50. Vary the water flowrate: 4 L/min, 8 L/min, and 12 L/min. Prepare a 600 mL beaker with 5cc of NaOH (0.1M) using a pipette and 3-5 drops of phenolphthalein. Weigh it. After each flowrate, collect effluent from bottom, using the beaker. Enough to make phenolphthalein/NaOH/effluent solution light pink. Reweigh it. Take the beaker with the effluent to the titrator. Set to titrate to pH 8.5. Then again to pH 4.0 Repeat steps 3 though 7for CO2/air flowrates of 75/25 and 25/75 varying the water feed flowrate. (Total of 9 runs)
25. Procedure Part II A – Chemical Gas Absorption (Using NaOH aqueous solution) Using 2 buckets; pour 16 liters of water in one and 8 liters in the other. Add 160 grams of NaOH to the 16-liter bucket and 80 grams of NaOH to the 8-liter bucket. Stir both buckets for a uniform concentration. Pour some of the 16 liters into the 8 liters, and vice-versa, for an equal concentration in both buckets. Pour this NaOH/water solution into the bucket behind the apparatus. Repeat procedure from Part I except do not add 5cc of NaOH to solution with phenolphthalein. Just the phenolphthalein is okay.
26. Procedure Part II B – Chemical Gas Absorption (Using NaOH aqueous solution with Heater) Using the remaining NaOH solution from Part II A, turn the pump off. Turn the heater on. Wait until the temperature reaches 50°C. Once it does, turn pump on, and repeat procedure for only 50/50 CO2 and air.
