Introduction
Eileen Forrester is the manager of the CMMI for
Services program at the Software Engineering
Institute, and the lead author of the Addison Wesley
book, CMMI for Services, Guidelines for Superior
Service. She was the co-chair of the International
Process Research Consortium and the editor of the
IPRC Process Research Framework. Forrester is
the developer of TransPlant, a transition-planning
process, and her current research area is in
process-oriented approaches to service delivery,
technology change, risk management, and emergent
system types. These approaches include GAIT, the
CMMI for Services, OCTAVE, MDA, and multi-model
improvement approaches. She has more than 30
years of experience in technology transition,
strategic planning, process improvement,
communication planning, and managing product,
service, and non-profit organizations.

What Changes to Expect in V1.3?

We have changes to the entire product suite, including models, training, and
appraisal products.


We designed the revision process so that it was based on what happens in the
field, had massive input and review from real users, and does not require large
reinvestment in your improvement program.


Expert partners and certified professionals have the details on the changes and
can assist you. Hundreds of them have already qualified.


The takeaway message is this: Version 1.3 is better, but in many ways a minor
revision, especially for users.

Model Updates in Version 1.3
All changes were based on change requests, which were disposed by a large
team from multiple organizations and then vetted by reviewers and piloters from
even more organizations.
The most substantive changes are to the high maturity PAs. These changes are
not really new, but are now made explicit and clear.
Generic goals 4 & 5 have been eliminated.
Category and PA names have changed slightly in each model.
Each model has changes to the core PAs and PAs specific to them (Acquisition,
Engineering, and Service), but these are more modest.
Language and architecture has been harmonized and aligned wherever
possible.
Front matter and glossary and informative material have all been improved.
All three models will be released as SEI technical reports on November 1.

Appraisal Updates for Version 1.3
Goal 1. Increase efficiency of the appraisal process
• Consider entire lifecycle of cost and value (not just ―onsite‖)
• Decrease cost while maintaining accuracy and utility
• Increase value returned per cost incurred

Goal 2. Remove barriers to broader use (e.g., other constellations)
• Remove terminology that uniquely applies to CMMI-DEV
• Enhance the capability of current set of practitioners (LAs & ATMs)
• Clarify skill and experience requirements for all users

Goal 3. Assure synchronization with CMMI Product Suite for V1.3
• Manage level of change within specified Steering Group guidance
• Enhance consistency of usage and fidelity to method requirements
• Evolution of methods and techniques based on change requests

The models are complete and frozen and about to release.


Training products roll out in a series over the next several months. If you might

Appraisal products are currently in community review. See the next few slides

CMMI-SVC product and collaboration needs
Seeking guides for particular disciplines: education, health care,
insurance, and maintenance are hottest topics
In focus groups with partners, instructors, and appraisers, discussing
whether an optional practitioner, implementation, or coach certificate is
needed; opinions are polarized
People want actionable guidance on model choice, transition DEV to
SVC, using DEV and SVC together, using ITIL and SVC together
Considering adjunct security and People CMM content
Need publishable cases and results and ROI
Want to consider joint marketing with partners—maybe shared
segmenting and targeting is a first step
Looking for pilots on tough issues like combined and multi appraisal,
appraising ITIL with SCAMPI, etc.

Introduction Eileen Forrester is the manager of the CMMI for Services program at the Software Engineering Institute, and the lead author of the Addison Wesley book, CMMI for Services, Guidelines for Superior Service. She was the co-chair of the International Process Research Consortium and the editor of the IPRC Process Research Framework. Forrester is the developer of TransPlant, a transition-planning process, and her current research area is in process-oriented approaches to service delivery, technology change, risk management, and emergent system types. These approaches include GAIT, the CMMI for Services, OCTAVE, MDA, and multi-model improvement approaches. She has more than 30 years of experience in technology transition, strategic planning, process improvement, communication planning, and managing product, service, and non-profit organizations.   • 9. What Changes to Expect in V1.3? We have changes to the entire product suite, including models, training, and appraisal products. We designed the revision process so that it was based on what happens in the field, had massive input and review from real users, and does not require large reinvestment in your improvement program. Expert partners and certified professionals have the details on the changes and can assist you. Hundreds of them have already qualified. The takeaway message is this: Version 1.3 is better, but in many ways a minor revision, especially for users. Model Updates in Version 1.3 All changes were based on change requests, which were disposed by a large team from multiple organizations and then vetted by reviewers and piloters from even more organizations. The most substantive changes are to the high maturity PAs. These changes are not really new, but are now made explicit and clear. Generic goals 4 & 5 have been eliminated. Category and PA names have changed slightly in each model. Each model has changes to the core PAs and PAs specific to them (Acquisition, Engineering, and Service), but these are more modest. Language and architecture has been harmonized and aligned wherever possible. Front matter and glossary and informative material have all been improved.
