Disrupting the
20th Century
Teaching Model
Douglas Radecki IIT Institute of Design Interaction Design
Classroom Focused Learning
Monolithic Technology Old Industrial Age Model
Based on the success of the American factory,
many educators and policy makers believed
the same approach would create highly skill
and knowledgeable citizens. This meant
a teacher would lead their students through a
set of curriculum, moving at an overall pace
(Tyack and Cuban). While, at the time, that
approach worked, the world has grown more
complex, and with that the expectations around
the skills and knowledge one must posses.

Project Based Learning:
A look at the Montessori system
Project Based learning is highly motivating
as it allows students to utilize the lesson,
synthesizing the knowledge as they complete
tasks in order to complete the project.
Understanding that people learn differently,
that there are many types of intelligence
(Howard Gardner), the education model
around Montessori was ahead of the curve.
By empowering children with freedom and
proper level of guidance, children could
pursue their own interests.

Student-Centric
Interest Based Learning
4
Student-centric learning in the natural next
step in education. This model of learning
focuses on the students unique interests and
recognizes the need to teach the student
according to his learning style.

CLASSROOM
The Computer is treated as another tools to
help teach in the monolithic teaching model.
ONLINE
The internet allows students to explore their
interests, learning from groups of educators
who come from professional teaching
circles, or knowledgable amateurs who want
to share their knowledge

PRODUCTION
Khan Academy presented the world a
successful example of remote learning.
Teachers have now begun to use Khan
Academy to teach the lectures, using class
time to work with teacher’s one-on-one
(WIRED July 2012).
Moving forward Google’s Course Builder
was announced in early September which
will allow users to create their own
content and tests.
7
The future continues to be open source.
AGGREGATION
Sites like BetterAt will be lead by student’s
who come to BetterAt to help them explore
their interests, finding a community of
peers and mentors to learn from and
inspire them.
Reddit University will allow the community
to self organize around topics and post
sites that individuals have created,
becoming a filter to help students discover
the “best of” on the topics of their choice.

Udacity
Udacity’s goal is to provide students who
might not have the chance to sit in the
classrooms of the leading universities in
the world, the opportunity to learn from
industry leaders.
Many of Udacity’s classes are taught by
internet celebrities, or industry
celebrities. This helps build credibility for
Udacity, and makes the students excited
to listen through the lectures of some of
their own personal heroes.

teachers are fundamentally better
then us university professors.

Udacity
The Future for Udacity
10
Continue to be community focused, Udacity will
identify the most engaged helpful students who
would be a good employee and give them the
opportunity for job placement in leading technology
firms, where their CVs may have gone unnoticed.

Challenges for Remote Learning
Community engagement
Highlighting successes
Keeping students motivated even when

Incorporate various data
streams, social media,
tests, homework, to get
a sense of wether kids
are understanding.
For supporting members
(teachers, mentors, parents) For students
Gamification of
education to increase
engagement.
Emphasize collaboration
between students.
Project based work that
has real effect. eg.
Helping build solutions
Social networks play
a larger impact in
organizing students
together so they can
share and help each
other learn.
