1. Operation Manual for Spex 1403 0.85 m
Double Spectrometer
Precautions –Individuals should always be careful in the Raman Lab (Rm. 144), as the
laboratory equipment is not only delicate but also extremely expensive and difficult to repair.
Step 1 – Turn on the Spex MSD Mini-Step-Driver, which is located directly in front of the Spex
1403 0.85 m Double Spectrometer.
Step 2 – Next, turn on the Stanford Research Systems, Inc. high voltage power supply, which
is located on the top right side of the Spectrometer. (The voltage will automatically go to 1700
Volts.)
Step 3 – Go to the back of the Spectrometer. On the top of the machine, there are three
control panels—a Spectra Physics CDRH Laser Controller, a model 325B temperature
controller, and a model 505B laser diode driver. On the model 505B laser diode driver, there
will be a key in the laser enable keyhole. Turn the key to the on position. Next, look for the
output panel on the driver and press the button located in the panel. A light green light should
turn on. (If necessary, the current can easily be adjusted by slowly turning the knob. Note –
The maximum current allowed is 300 mA and the minimum current allowed is 100 mA. Do not
pass these levels!)

2. Step 4 – Go back to the front of the Spectrometer. Turn on the desktop computer and then
open the ‘Start FURSI’ program.
Step 5 – Once the program has been opened, change the laser wavenumber (cm^1) to 25,000,
and then select next.
Step 6 – After that, use the directional arrows in the program to go position 18,310.
Step 7 – Select any glass sample, and then properly clean it with a Kimwipe. After that, gently
place the glass sample into the sample compartment of the Spectrometer.
Step 8 – Carefully adjust the position of the glass sample inside of the Spectrometer until the
maximum wavelength in the blue box on the computer screen is obtained. Once a comfortable
position has been achieved, select next.
Step 9 – In the description box, type a description and then select start scan. (Note – The
description also serves as the file’s name.)
Turn off the machines in the following order –
Step 1 – Close the ‘Start FURSI’ program. (Leave the PC on, however.)
Step 2 – Go to the back of the Spectrometer and the press the button on the model 505B laser
diode driver. Turn the key to the off position.

high voltage power supply machine.
Step 4 – Turn off the Spex MSD Mini-Step-Driver.
