A. CCGPS Lesson Standards:
READING LITERARY (RL)
ELACC6RL9: Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g.,
stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their
approaches to similar themes and topics.
ELACC6RL1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says
explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
ELACC6RL10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including
stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently,
with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
READING INFORMATIONAL (RI)
ELACC6RI1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says
explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
ELACC6RI10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in
the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at

Lesson Standards:
4.2.4 Show an appreciation for literature by electing to read for pleasure and
expressing an interest in various literary genres.
Day 1:
Media Center –
o Show “Literary Genres” YouTube video as lesson “hook” to build interest
o Build more background with “Genres” PowerPoint & discuss textual
evidence and inference for each category. SLMS reads sample excerpts
from SLMC collection aloud
o Offer students a list of book leads websites to explore on library
computers w/partner
o Each student from partnership writes one chosen favorite title from
website preferences on post-it note and places in “genre baskets” with at
least one example of textual evidence or inference to support chosen
category placement, as well as, one comparison statement written
referencing personal genre preference denoted on post-it
Day 2:
Computer Lab –
o Popcorn review “genre basket” examples from previous day’s lesson &
discuss
o Watch social networking podcast & discuss book genre blogs & blog
possibilities
2. o SLMS introduces “Edmodo” and students practice blogging on SLMS’
Edmodo account with teacher prompts: “I like the book, __(list book
title)_______, from the _________(list genre)__________ genre
because__(site reason)_____. I often read books from this genre of
writing because I really like how this genre _________(site
characteristic(s) of this genre that you prefer over another genre’s
characteristic(s) & tell why)___________, because _________________.”
Day 3:
Computer Lab –
o Students complete computer-based lesson vodcast “What can you learn
from the title of a story?” - making predictions based on book title & genre.
o Students complete “Literature Genres” PowerPoint Quiz
o Students complete Edmodo blog reflection: I learned the most about
literature genres when we… I was surprised to learn that… When I think
about genres, one thing I’m still wondering is…
