SOUTH MARSTON’S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
Thank you Gemma
We were sad to say goodbye to
Gemma Cheal, our Parish Clerk,
this month. Gemma has been
keeping the Parish Councillors in
order for the last three years. In
addition to supporting the monthly
meetings, Gemma has also been
the face of the Parish Council,
providing a smiling and helpful
point of contact to villagers who
needed advice or wanted to raise
an issue. The workload has been
high over this period due to the
challenges from the proposed
expansion of the village but
Gemma’s support, guidance and
sense of humour has been a great
help in progressing plans for the
future of the village whilst, at the
same time, dealing with the day to
day problems.
Gemma will continue to be associated with the village in her role as
clerk to the governor’s of South Marston School. We wish her and her
family all the best for the future and good luck in her new role as Clerk
to Covingham Parish Council, where she thinks there is a fighting
chance of the monthly meetings finishing before ten o’clock!

Dear Friends
Have you been shocked by the news recently? People abusing
young people, murder, lies and character assassinations spewing
from our politicians’ mouths. I went on a training day recently about
how to help victims of domestic abuse. 1 in 4 women experience
this and about 1 in 9 men. These are terrifying figures.
What is the value of life in our society? By pushing God out of our
thoughts and community, which is what our ’politically correct’
culture does, are we making matters worse?
What a difference it makes when we understand that we are all
made in the image of God who loves each one of us. Do we think
we won’t have to stand before our maker and give an account of
our lives?
Its so easy to have righteous indignation and anger against the
perpetrators of these crimes. Pointing the finger away from
ourselves and toward others misses the point. The Bible makes it
clear that Jesus said even to think these things is to have murder,
theft, envy and dishonesty in our hearts.
When gossip, backbiting and character assassination, comes from
our mouths we are falling short of God’s ideal and devaluing the
people we speak of.
Perhaps we need to pray St. Francis’ prayer anew
‘Make me a channel of your peace’
You’ll find the whole prayer on page 7.
God bless,
Vicky Fleming

THANK YOU
A huge thank you to Colin and Jenny McEwen for continuing to
cut the Glebe grass and Richard Sansum and William Hiscocks
for working hard in the churchyard. Please help us to keep it
tidy by disposing of non-biodegradable things in the bin
provided and compost the rest in the designated area.
Church of England rules for churchyards also state that artificial
flowers and ornaments other than the agreed memorial stones
are not allowed. Our churchyard has to be kept within these
guidelines, please help us to maintain its peace and beauty.
Thank you.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

South Marston Assisting Wildlife
SMAWL is a group of South Marston volunteers who care about wildlife.
Thank you to all of our volunteers in May: Barry, Brian, Donald, Gav, Ray,
Susan & Verity, for all of their recent hard work at Oak Tree Corner.
Here’s another in our series of SMAWL related puzzles.
How many words can you make from these letters?
The SMAWL team is composed entirely of volunteers and is currently
looking for more help. Anyone with a spare hour or two throughout the
year will be most welcome. It’s sociable and helps to improve the look of
the village. We welcome any age and ability (although children must be
accompanied by an adult).
For further information, please call Chris on 829868 or Susan on 824957,
or email Chris at Wttmh@tiscali.co.uk. You can also read more about the
group on the village website, www.southmarston.org.uk.
Each word must have at least four letters,
using the centre letter “T” each time.
No letter can be used more than once in each
word.
Names are not allowed.
There is one nine-letter word in the grid.
15 words = Good
20 words = Well done
25+ words = Excellent

Community Speedwatch
South Marston Village Summer Fete
We Need Volunteers
The Community Speedwatch scheme run by the Swindon Borough
Council in conjunction with the Police gives local people the chance to be
actively involved in making South Marston’s roads safer for everyone in
the village. We have been operating for
nearly two months now and have
monitored speeds of nearly 700 vehicles
on the three main roads in the village
30mph zone. Overall only 2% of the cars
were exceeding 36mph and of these,
none were on Highworth Road, a few on
Thornhill Road and the majority (three
quarters) on Old Vicarage Lane past
Manor Cottages. If you want to join the team, please contact the village
co-ordinator Tony Leathart on 827744 or tony.leathart@btinternet.com.

South Marston Allotments
We are lucky, in that the village has allotments just on the outskirts of
the village and in a very peaceful setting. At this time, we have 28 plots
of varying sizes. The cost of
a plot is currently £25 a
year for village residents.
We can grow vegetables,
fruit and flowers but we are
not allowed to graze sheep,
chickens or other animals!
In sunny weather it is a
delightful location to spend
a quiet afternoon working
away from the pressures of
home and TV. It is good
exercise as well.
However, we currently have
two vacancies, but no
villagers on the waiting list to take them up. Hence my little note here.
The Parish Council manage these plots and like to offer them to
villagers first, but if there is no one on the waiting list, we do offer them
to nearby parishes on a
first come first served
basis.
So if you would like to
grow your own
vegetables etc, put your
name down on the
waiting list for an
allotment. Please give
me a call on 826697 or
email barry@capital-

South Marston Parish Council
Parish Councillor Vacancy
South Marston Parish Council currently has two vacancies on the Parish
Council.
If you would like to know more about becoming a Parish Councillor and
would be interested in joining the team, please contact the Parish Clerk
via email: clerksmpc@aol.com.
Sylvia Brown – South Marston Parish Councillor
It was as far back as 1988 when I first became a Parish Councillor, but
for the past year I have been the council's Vice Chair. I enjoyed a long
apprenticeship in village volunteering, having at various times chaired the
playgroup, the South Marston Recreation
Association, helped run the Youth Club and
served on the PTAs at primary and
secondary schools. My particular role on
the Parish Council is as a member of the
Finance group, making sure we use our
public funds wisely. I also represent South
Marston when it comes to relationships with
other local parish councils and with
Swindon Borough Council. Over the years,
key challenges have all been associated
with planning matters, so I have found
myself acting as a lay planning 'expert'. This has been put to good use in
negotiating South Marston's position in respect of development east of
Swindon.
To keep informed of all the latest Parish Council news, including
minutes of Parish Council meetings, please visit
www.southmarston.org.uk and click on the ‘Parish Council’ section.
Parish Council Meetings
Members of the public are welcome to attend Parish Council meetings
which are held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm in the
Village Hall. There is an “Open 10 Minutes” section at the start of the
meeting where you are invited to ask questions or discuss an agenda
item. It would be helpful if you could inform the Chairman at the start of
the meeting of any items that you wish to raise or discuss. All agendas
are published on the village website and on the village notice boards,
Sylvia Brown, Parish Councillor

South Marston Enterprise (SME) Group
The SME Group is for people in the village who own or run businesses or
have a general interest in business topics. We have a topic for each
meeting followed by a social chat over wine and nibbles.
The title for the May meeting of the SME group was "I know a man who
can". During the evening the group swapped names and contact details
of people or organisations who had proved to be useful business
resources. Contacts included accountants, business card printers and
marketing professionals. Interestingly, for busy working professionals like
ourselves, it seemed the contacts most in demand were for trades people
(property maintenance, electricians and plumbers) who were reliable,
punctual, courteous and thorough!
We discussed the agenda for upcoming meetings which includes talks on
marketing, business goal setting and a summary of our individual
business years. If you would like to join the SME group please contact
Hazel Andrews 01793 827507 or by e-mail at Hazel@acuhome.co.uk
