WHY? If you would like to learn more
about how the village is likely to
expand with the proposed housing
development, then this is the day to
do it!
WHERE & WHEN? Join us at the
Mercure Hotel in the village, between
3pm and 8pm. Come as a family or
on your own—all are welcome.
WHAT WILL YOU SEE? Detailed
proposals about how the development
could be structured, what should be in the village and how it will retain its character,
but with more houses in it. There will also be information about the proposed
housing development at Rowborough as well as the building plans for south of the
A420.
WHY IS THIS EVENT DIFFERENT? Feedback from previous village events has
guided how the Parish Council has worked with Swindon Borough Planners and the
Developers up to now. This summer is the final opportunity to influence the overall
shape of any future development. We expect the first actual planning application to
be submitted for Rowborough and South Marston village before the end of the year.
CAN I ASK QUESTIONS AND GIVE MY VIEWS? Parish Councillors, Developers
and others will be on hand to provide more information. You will be invited to make
comments and share ideas either at the event or once you return home. All
comments will be reviewed and taken into consideration.
In the next few weeks, every house in South Marston will receive a leaflet
explaining in more detail what will happen at the event.

Dear Friends,
I am thinking about what I should pack for my holiday. Fortunately we
are going by car and the endless list of ‘just in case’ items don’t have to
be carried or weighed in!
We can be the same about our ‘life journey’ too. If
we are unsure that we can make the journey
successfully only relying on God, then we burden
ourselves with all sorts of unnecessary baggage.
In this ‘minimalist’ culture I find myself a little at
odds because I am a hoarder. Well, it might come
in useful….. and I can tell you countless stories of
times when I have been big and brave and cleared
out things only to find I need them after all!
Some people must have particular possessions because they feel they
give them status or social acceptability. Unfortunately we can find
ourselves spending time and energy on maintaining these possessions
and end up being slaves to them or their demands.
Other burdens we carry can be relationships—unhealthy ones that harm
us or others. Perhaps we encourage dependence on us to make us feel
important or we become dependent on the opinion of others for our own
self-worth. Then there are the spiritual burdens of guilt and regret;
feelings of failure which weigh us down.
We are called to travel life’s journey lightly, Christ promises to walk with
us and has taken our burdens on himself. We need not strive for He
gives us everything we need and there will never be an event for which
He cannot provide. Are you carrying unnecessary baggage?

grass and Richard Sansum and William Hiscocks for working hard in the
churchyard. Please help us to keep it tidy by disposing of non-biodegradable
things in the bin provided and compost the rest in the designated area.
Church of England rules for churchyards also state that artificial flowers and
ornaments other than the agreed memorial stones are not allowed. Our
churchyard has to be kept within these guidelines, please help us to maintain
its peace and beauty.

‘Held in the Heart’
Have you suffered the loss of a child or given birth to a stillborn baby?
We are doing a special service in memory of these dearly loved children
who are held in the hearts of their parents. The pain when things go
contrary to the expected order is so great. We recognise this, and
realising that our Rosemary service in November time may not meet
your special needs we are holding 'Held in the Heart.'
This is a service of remembrance which will be held on Sunday, 14th
July at 4pm at St. Margaret's Church, Stratton. Please come and join
us, however many years ago you suffered your loss - together we will
remember and support each other.

Helen Baber is the new curate with the Stratton Team Ministry and will be living in
the South Marston vicarage for the next four years. She is a Bristol girl; in fact she
has lived in North Bristol all her life. She was baptised as a Methodist, but from the
age of 5 moved to the local Church of England in Henbury. Sunday school and the
Church Lads and Girls Brigade helped form the foundations of her faith.
Helen has been an active lay person before ordination, serving thirteen years as a
Church Warden. She has two daughters,
Jessica 21 and Harriet 18; they will be regular
visitors to South Marston. She also has two
dogs and a caravan, all of which are her pride
and joy. She particularly likes to holiday in North
Cornwall, but she is happy anywhere near the
sea. She has recently learnt to fish and plans to
fill her freezer with her trips to Seaton!
Helen trained at Southern Theological
Education Training Scheme (STETS) based at
Sarum College in Salisbury. This was a part
time course over three years.
Helen chose this course so she could continue
to work full time, she felt that the job she did
would be of value to her future ministry. Helen
was a training and development consultant for a
large pharmaceutical company, working
specifically with change management in the
NHS.
Last September Helen had the privilege of training at the World Council of Churches
Ecumenical Training Institute just outside of Geneva, she spent 5 months studying
ecumenical theology with students from all of the world as far afield as Jamaica and
Madagascar and with all denominations including Armenian Oriental Orthodox and
Lutheran, she says ‘she will never take Churches together for granted ever again!’
Helen is really looking forward to meeting everyone in Stratton, South Marston
and Stanton Fitzwarren and she has already been warmly welcomed and
showered with good wishes already!

Christmas Hampers - new qualification criteria
The government has increased the State Pension age for women to 65
phased from April 2016 to December 2018. A further increase will be phased
in to raise the State Pension age for all to 66 from December 2018.
In consideration of these changes, and the proposed expansion of the village
community, the Trust will be making the following changes to the criteria for
allocation of Christmas Hampers to senior citizens of South Marston. These
changes will be implemented on 1st April 2016.
The changes are not subject to the exact scheduling of government criteria.
To qualify for a Christmas Hamper the recipient is required to have
been in permanent residency in South Marston for a period of 3 years
prior to submission of registration.
All new applicants must be 65 years of age on 24th December 2016 to
be eligible to register.
Mobile Library
Swindon Borough Council are reviewing the mobile library service that supports
outlying villages and communities. Did you know that the mobile library visits South
Marston?
If you currently use it, we need your views on how important the service is and are
there any changes you would like to see made? We will then feed these back to

There are now 23 now new allotments in the village that have been built in
conjunction with Stratton Saint Margaret Parish Council. 10 of these were let
in the first 36 hours of them being ready for occupation!
We expect the remaining ones to be taken up very soon.
To date, we have no South Marston residents on our waiting list.
If you would like to to take on your own allotment to grow fruit and vegetables

Parish Council Meetings
Members of the public are welcome to attend Parish Council meetings
which are held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm in the
Village Hall. There is an “Open 10 Minutes” section at the start of the
meeting where you are invited to ask questions or discuss an agenda
item. It would be helpful if you could inform the Chairman at the start of
the meeting of any items that you wish to raise or discuss. All agendas
are published on the village website and on the village notice boards,
prior to the meetings.

South Marston Enterprise (SME) Group
The SME group is for people in the village who own or run businesses or have a general
interest in business. We have a topic for each meeting followed by a social chat over wine
and nibbles.
In the June meeting we were joined by Ginny Rideout, who is a Cambridge Weight Plan
Consultant based in the village. The meeting was hosted by Rae of Raediance Beauty
and was all about using the self-development technique of the Johari window, to find out
more about ourselves and how other people perceive us. We all learnt a lot about our-
selves and it was great to receive positive feedback from other group members about the
qualities we had, but were unaware of!
This was followed by a general discussion about business and sharing useful information.

An Important Message from Wiltshire Police and
South Marston Neighbourhood Watch
Following the recent theft of a car from the South Marston School car park, please
make sure your vehicle is always locked when you leave it and the keys are removed
from the ignition. If a vehicle is stolen when the keys are in the ignition your car
insurance would be invalid.
Recently there have been two thefts from motor vehicles at beauty spots in this area,
one being Nightingale Wood. Please ensure no valuable items such as handbags,
Sat Navs, coats etc are left on show in your vehicle when left unattended. Also, for
those who visit these areas for walking their dog etc, if
you see any suspicious persons or vehicles please report
this to the Police immediately.
Please ensure your sheds, summerhouses and garages
are locked when you are not about; thieves/burglars may
steal items from these buildings or use items in them to
help break into your property. Also thieves/burglars may
use these buildings to hide in or store stolen goods which
they will later return to collect.
During the hot weather it is very important to remember
to shut and lock all windows and doors when you go out.
Even a small casement window left open can provide a
thief with a quick and simple way into a house. Please
don’t be tempted to leave anything unlatched, even
during a short absence from home.
Even when you are at home in the back of the house or in the back garden, make sure
the front of the house is secure. Anyone can take advantage of an open or unlocked
door or window to quickly nip in and help themselves to your valuables!

home security advice etc, by telephoning 101
Remember!
South Marston is a safe place to live with a very low crime rate but crime can happen
anywhere so be sensible and alert!

Annual General Meeting—Tuesday 11th June in the Village Hall at 2.00pm
Following the AGM a talk was given by Graham Carter on Alfred Williams in South
Marston. We heard how his life progressed and were surprised to learn of the many
activities he engaged in his life. We were shown and told about the houses in South
Marston he lived in and the effort he took to build Ranikhet for himself and his wife Mary
after his return from the war. He remained a working man in the railway works throughout
his life and never considered turning to be a fulltime poet/writer. His work output was
surprising all achieved after a full working day. Not only was he a poet but also a writer of
several books on various villages and the more well know book about life working in the
Swindon railway works. He also did some painting but little is known of his output.
Although he had well known people as friends he and his wife led a very private life and
would never accept charity at the expense of having a tragic end to their lives due to
poverty and ill health.

on a wagon train trip across Wyoming entitled “Beans and Dust”

the South Marston Mercure Hotel commencing at 2.00pm.
Tuesday 20th August –Trip: We will be visiting Highclere Castle, Garden and Museum

Our annual holiday this year will be to Nottingham, staying at Warners Thoresby Hall
Hotel for 4 nights departing from South Marston on the Monday 30th September and

Open Air Theatre Returns To Lydiard Park This Summer
Families are being invited to pack up a picnic and sample the very best in live
entertainment in the beautiful surroundings of Lydiard Park this summer
Lydiard Park is staging a series of open-air theatre performances over the coming months
starting with Shakespeare’s much-loved masterpiece Romeo and Juliet on Friday, 5
July. Heartbreak Productions’ unique storytelling style has a modern twist but maintains
all the intensity of the classic play, creating a compelling performance.
On Friday, 26 July, Quantum Theatre’s The Tales of Peter Rabbit & Benjamin Bunny
will use live music to bring the magical childhood stories by Beatrix Potter to life in a show
designed to appeal to all the family.
Family theatre continues on Friday, 16 August, when Illyria return to Lydiard Park to
present a new adaptation of Dick King-Smith’s heart-warming tale of friendship, courage
and determination, Babe the Sheep Pig.
Tickets for each of the open air theatre shows are £14 for adults, £9 for children
and £40 for a family ticket (2 adults & 2 children).

Young people can take part in a spine-tingling challenge as part of the Summer Reading
Challenge at Swindon Libraries. This year’s challenge has been dubbed Creepy House
and will involve children reading six books during the summer via their local library.
Those taking part are given a foldout poster to fill out and a certificate and medal will be
given to everyone who successfully completes the challenge. Children who read three
books as part of the challenge will receive a voucher for a free children’s DVD from
Swindon Libraries.
The challenge will be officially launched at a special event on Saturday, 20 July at
10.30am where Swindon Dance will perform a ‘Thriller’ dance routine. People attending
the launch event are being encouraged to wear fancy dress with the person in the best
costume winning a prize.
