Re: Daniel Mock
This letter may serve as a letter of reference for Daniel Mock, who served as a full-time intern in the Iowa Intelligence Fusion
Center (IFC) from September 2008 through June 2009. As an intern, Dan was treated as a regular IFC employee, and worked
closely with the analysts on a variety of projects. I served as his immediate supervisor during his internship.
Most of our duties involve law enforcement sensitive work, which means that details of the work cannot be shared widely. Dan
was assigned projects of varying sizes and types, from data entry and analysis to more complex analytical projects that required
him to condense large amounts of information into a concise and readable analysis of pertinent issues. Dan is a very good
writer, with a succinct style and a vocabulary that helps him to express complex ideas precisely and simply. He has the capacity
to process a great deal of information and summarize the essential points in a manageable form, without losing the essence of
the source information.
Although I cannot describe specific projects, I can give a couple of examples of the diversity of his experience here. In one
project, we were examining large amounts of sensitive individual-level data about a particular type of crime, with the goal of
identifying trends and patterns in crimes, criminals, criminal organizations, and law enforcement response. Dan assisted with
the data entry, and adapted well to the modifications made in the project as the analytical process evolved, and he was able to
help with the analysis of the larger picture to identify trends, patterns and commonalities. In a very different project in which
law enforcement and a private sector association were partnered, Dan was able to seek out the necessary information in order to
systematically set out the steps in a more effective law enforcement response that built upon the strengths of the private agency.
His work will form the basis for a training program for law enforcement officials across the state.
In addition to his analytical and writing skills, Dan is a diligent worker and an easy-going colleague who remains calm even in
crisis. He is reserved but friendly, with a great sense of humor. Dan is always eager to learn new things, has good questions
and seeks direction appropriately, asks for more work when he needs it, and works well with others.
Finally, I should note that all IFC employees must undergo a rigorous background investigation before they are approved for
employment. The background investigation standards for IFC employees are very similar to those used for peace officers and
federal “secret” level clearances. Temporary IFC employees are not eligible to seek a federal clearance, but there is nothing to
indicate Dan would have any issues of concern. He was consistently careful in maintaining our standards for non-disclosure of
sensitive information, and in his compliance with our internal policies.
We have enjoyed Dan’s tenure here, and would favorably consider him if there were funding for our analyst vacancies. I can
highly recommend him as an employee and co-worker. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Very truly yours,
Roxann M. Ryan, J.D., Ph.D.

2. Roxann Ryan indicates in her letter dated May 28, 2009 that my internship with the State of Iowa, Intelligence Fusion Center
ended in June 2009. That is incorrect; the internship ended in July 2010
