What is Twitter?
Twitter is a social networking and
microblogging service that allows you
answer the question, "What are you doing?”
by sending short text messages 140
characters in length, called "tweets", to your
friends, or "followers."

Why Twitter is useful?
Twitter has many uses for both personal and business use. It's
a great way to keep in touch with your friends and quickly
broadcast information about where you are and what
you're up to.
For business, Twitter can be used to broadcast your
company's latest news and blog posts, interact with your
customers, or to enable easy internal collaboration and
group communication.

Twitter is for everyone At its core, Twitter is a public forum
where anyone can read, write and share messages.
Twitter is short and sweet Twitter is made up of 140-
character messages called Tweets. You can do a lot with
140 characters like include videos and photos. It’s an easy
way to bring you closer to the people and topics you care
about.
Twitter is real-time On Twitter, information is shared
immediately. People use it on desktops, tablets and mobile
devices, to share events, news and real-time conversations.

Branding Customers consume a wide range of media, and there
are advantages for brands that have a presence at different
customer touch points. Having a presence on Twitter reinforces the
brand and increases exposure to customers.
Customer service Twitter can be used to monitor what customers
are saying about you and can be used to respond to customer
complaints. Twitter allows customers to talk directly to the
company, bypassing other channels such as email and call center
and may act as the first point of contact, though other channels
may be important for the follow-up.
Why Twitter is useful for business?

Product development Twitter can be used to collect opinions
about changes to products and services, and functions as an
excellent crowdsourcing tool.
Scoping out new opportunities By getting greater insight into
customer needs, Twitter can be used to research opportunities for
new revenue streams.
Ratings and reviews Customers are talking about brands on
Twitter, and they are actively recommending companies and
reviewing products. A presence on Twitter allows brands to be a
part of that dialogue and shape the perception of the brand.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Special offers and competitions Many companies are starting to
offer competitions in exchange for a retweet. Followers who
retweet are then picked at random to win a prize.
Keeping customers up-to-date and informed This is particularly
useful for keeping users informed during unforeseen
circumstances, such as delays. The company may not always be
able to rectify the problem, but keeping customers informed
counts for a lot.
Promoting specific products Twitter can be used to promote new
products, such as managers‟ specials or pick of the week.
Feedback If customers don't like something, they now have a
greater opportunity to tell you. From the brand's perspective, they
now have access to a whole range of free customer insight that
can feed into improvements to the business.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Listen first: It's tempting to start tweeting right away. But before you
begin, follow and observe brands and businesses similar to yours to
see what they’re doing well.
Be yourself, be authentic: There’s no need to be overly formal on
Twitter. Your Tweets should reflect the individuality and personality
of your business. People respond best to friendly, conversational
Tweets.
Mention your followers: Mention your followers in positive Tweets
that contain relevant, personalized content to establish goodwill
on Twitter. They may do the same for you in the future, giving you
added exposure.
Sample tips help your business on twitter
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Stand out: Use Twitter to share unique information about your
company that your customers can’t find elsewhere, like behind-
the-scenes photos, discounts or new product previews.
Interact and respond: Reply when people tweet about you.
Favorite and retweet positive messages, and thank those who
praise you. Keep in mind that Retweets can also represent your
voice and brand personality. Promptly address critical Tweets
about your business in a calm, helpful manner.
Tweet exceptional and shareable content: On Twitter, there’s a
pattern: the most retweeted content tends to contain links,
pictures, videos or quotes. Paste a link of any length into the Tweet
box and it will automatically be shortened to fit the 140 character
limit.
Stay trendy: Participating in Twitter trends, whether organically or
through Promoted Trends.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Make it a habit
Monday: Special promotions
Launch special Twitter-only promotions to your followers. Tweet an offer
code that unlocks a promotion or tweet a secret word that customers
can mention to get a discount when they visit your business.
Tuesday: Behind-the-scenes
Tweet behind-the-scenes videos or photos that your followers can’t get
any other way.
Wednesday: Helpful tips
Create a regular series of Tweets that are informative or surprising. If
you’re a chef, tweet recipes or kitchen tips. If you have a fashion
boutique, tweet ways to match current trends with vintage items.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Thursday: Media spotlights
Highlight positive press stories and news about your company, industry
or community that your followers will find interesting. Be sure to mention
the @username of the reporter or media outlet when you tweet the
story. This provides clear attribution and recognizes the source .
Friday: Focus on your people
Highlight the people who help run your company by tweeting photos of
them hard at work and having fun .

Follow, Follower and Unfollow
To follow someone on Twitter is to subscribe to their Tweets in your
timeline. A follower is another Twitter user who has followed you. To
stop following another Twitter user is to Unfollow them. Once you
do this, their Tweets no longer show up in your timeline.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Reply
An @reply is a Tweet posted in reply to another user’s message.
This is usually done by clicking the “reply” button in their Tweet.
@replies always begin with the “@” symbol, followed by the
username.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Retweet
You can pass along someone’s Tweet by retweeting it. Just hit the
Retweet button to send the original message to all of your
followers.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Favorite
You can mark a tweet as a "favorite" so that they appear in a
special "favorite's" list. This is so you can see the best, funniest, most
inspiring tweets, etc. that you liked in the one place.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Mention
Bring a Tweet to a user’s attention by including their @username in
a Tweet. This is called a mention and will appear to the
@username you mentioned as well as to all of your followers. You
can see who mentioned you in the mention section of your Twitter
profile.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Hashtag
Users often add the hashtag symbol (#) before words or phrases in
their Tweets to categorize them for others or to organize
conversations around a theme. Users can click on hashtags to see
similarly-themed Tweets.
Digital Marketing Arts 2013 ©
Message (or DM)
A direct message (DM) is a private message that only you and the
recipient can see. You can only send and receive DMs from your
followers. To DM someone, start your Tweet with DM or D.

Having a presence on Twitter reinforces the brand and increases exposure to customers. Customer service Twitter can be used to monitor what customers are saying about you and can be used to respond to customer complaints. Twitter allows customers to talk directly to the company, bypassing other channels such as email and call center and may act as the first point of contact, though other channels may be important for the follow-up. Why Twitter is useful for business?

The company may not always be able to rectify the problem, but keeping customers informed counts for a lot. Promoting specific products Twitter can be used to promote new products, such as managers‟ specials or pick of the week. Feedback If customers don't like something, they now have a greater opportunity to tell you. From the brand's perspective, they now have access to a whole range of free customer insight that can feed into improvements to the business.
  • 9. Digital Marketing Arts 2013 © Listen first: It's tempting to start tweeting right away. But before you begin, follow and observe brands and businesses similar to yours to see what they’re doing well. Be yourself, be authentic: There’s no need to be overly formal on Twitter.
