Which book of the Bible do
you suppose this one is?
6. Introduction
• Author = Luke
• He’s only mentioned by name 3X’s;
• Date Written = A.D. 60-62
• Acts tells us more about the Holy Spirit’s work than any
other book.
• 2 Part Division Of Acts;
• Peter is the key person in chapters 1-12;
• Paul is the key person in chapters 13-28.
• Luke/Acts =two volumes, this one work makes up over
one-fourth of the content of the New Testament
7. Carefully Investigated, Eyewitness Account
• Luke 1:1-4 Many have undertaken to draw up an
account of the things that have been fulfilled
among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us
by those who from the first were eyewitnesses
and servants of the word. 3 Therefore, since I
myself have carefully investigated everything
from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to
write an orderly account for you, most excellent
Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty
of the things you have been taught.
8. The Promise Of The Holy Spirit “in”
• John 14:17-20 the Spirit of truth. The world
cannot accept him, because it neither sees
him nor knows him. But you know him, for he
lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not
leave you as orphans; I will come to you….20
On that day you will realize that I am in my
Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
• Acts 2 fulfilled that prophecy
9. 4 Part Divine Outline Of Acts
• Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
10. Why Study The Book Of Acts?
• What’s so
important
about it.
• J. Vernon
McGee calls it
a “funnel
book.”
11. Acts Is Historical
• Acts is very pragmatic
• Hands on
• Not a theological treatise
• Not about doctrine
• It’s about what happened.
• Very precisely!
14. Acts 5:1-11
Death of Ananias
• What’s wrong with this
picture?
• Acts 5:6…and carried him
out…
• Acts 5:9 The feet of the
men who buried your
husband are at the door,
and they will carry you out
also.
15. Acts 5:3, Satan Can Fill The Heart
• Acts 5:3…how is it that Satan has so filled your heart …
• Satan can fill the heart of a believer
• Not indwelling or possession but the desire of his heart
• 1 John 4:4…the one who is in you is greater than the one
who is in the world.
• Ps 21:1-2 O Lord, the king rejoices in your strength. How
great is his joy in the victories you give! 2 You have granted
him the desire of his heart and have not withheld the
request of his lips.
• 1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the
devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone
to devour.
• Eph 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the
evil one.
16. Acts 5:3, Lied To The Holy Spirit
• Acts 5:3…how is it that Satan has so filled your
heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…
• You can’t lie to an impersonal force
• The Holy Spirit is God;
• Acts 5:4… “You have not lied to men but to
God.”
17. Acts 5:3,
Personhood Of The Holy Spirit
• Acts 5:3…lied to the Holy Spirit…
• Acts 5:4…lied to …to God.”
• You can’t lie to an impersonal force, it requires
personhood (human, angelic, or divine) to be lied
to, a mind, an intellect.
• A mind is required for personhood. When
someone's mind is gone we say they are a
vegetable (non person).
• NAU Romans 8:27…the mind of the Spirit…
• The Holy Spirit has a mind, the Holy Spirit is God!
18. Acts 5:3, Lying Is Sin
• Ex 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness
against thy neighbour. KJV
• Col 3:9 Do not lie to each other, since you have
taken off your old self with its practices
• Rev 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the
vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those
who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars
— their place will be in the fiery lake of burning
sulfur. This is the second death."
19. Acts 5:4, Not Socialism
• NAU Acts 5:4 "While it remained unsold, did it not
remain your own? And after it was sold, was it
not under your control? Why is it that you have
conceived this deed in your heart? You have not
lied to men but to God.”
• The land was theirs as well as the proceeds.
• The early church thrived on Holy Spirit enabled
generosity, not legalistic , or forced confiscation,
as in Socialism.
• Also, no mention of tithes, or firstfruits offerings
20. Acts 5:5, Miracles Blessings
• NAU Acts 5:5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell
down and breathed his last; and great fear came over
all who heard of it.
• Very many of God’s miracles are not considered
blessings by those who experience them.
• NAU Genesis 19:11 They struck the men who were at
the doorway of the house with blindness…
• NAU 2 Kings 6:18 …He struck them with blindness
according to the word of Elisha.
• NAU Numbers 12:10 …behold, Miriam was leprous…
• NAU 2 Chronicles 26:20 …he was leprous…the LORD had
smitten him.
• Deuteronomy 28:28, Zechariah 12:4, Exodus 4:6, Acts 13:11
22. Acts 5:12 The Apostles Miracles
• Acts 5:12 The apostles performed many
miraculous signs and wonders among the
people…
• Who did them?
• 2 Cor 12:12 The things that mark an apostle
— signs, wonders and miracles — were done
among you with great perseverance.
23. Acts 5:11-13, great fear
• NAU Acts 5:11 And great fear came over the whole
church, and over all who heard of these things. 12
At the hands of the apostles many signs and
wonders were taking place among the people;
and they were all with one accord in Solomon's
portico. 13 But none of the rest dared to
associate with them; however, the people held
them in high esteem.
• This is not your modern “seeker friendly” church!
• NAU Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with
all the people. And the Lord was adding to their
number day by day those who were being saved.
25. ACTS 5:20,
Go Stand And Speak In The Temple
• NAU Acts 5:20 "Go
[imperative present middle],
stand [aorist passive] and
speak [imperative present
active] to the people in
the temple the whole
message of this Life.“
• We’re commanded to
go, and speak. God
enables to stand
26. Acts 5:21,
• NAU Acts 5:21 Upon hearing this, they entered
into the temple about daybreak and began to
teach. Now when the high priest and his
associates came, they called the Council
together, even all the Senate of the sons of
Israel, and sent orders to the prison house for
them to be brought.
27. Acts 5:28, Not To Teach In This Name
• Acts 5:28 "We gave you strict orders not to
teach in this name," he said. "Yet you have
filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are
determined to make us guilty of this man's
blood."
• Acts 5:29 Peter and the other apostles
replied: "We must obey God rather than men!
• Remember Dan 3:16, Civil Disobedience;
28. Acts 5:28, Oh, We Do Forget
• NAU Acts 5:28 …intend to bring this man's
blood upon us.”
• How quickly we forget our words when it
doesn't serve our immediate purpose.
• NAU Matthew 27:25 And all the people said,
"His blood shall be on us and on our children!“
31. Proverbs 9:9, Teach
• Proverbs 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man and
he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and
he will increase his learning.
• Harriet Beecher Stowe once said, “I long to put
the experience of fifty years at once into your
young lives, to give you at once the key of that
treasure chamber every gem of which has cost
me tears and struggles and prayers, but you must
work for these inward treasures yourselves.”
32. Acts 5:31, Exalted To His Right Hand?
• NAU Acts 5:31 "He is the one whom God
exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a
Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and
forgiveness of sins.
• Where would they get this idea?
• NAS Psalm 110:1 A Psalm of David . The LORD
says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand, Until I
make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet."
33. Acts 5:34, Gamaliel
• Acts 5:34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a
teacher of the law, who was honored by all the
people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered
that the men be put outside for a little while.
• Acts 22:2-3…Then Paul said: 3 "I am a Jew, born
in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city.
Under Gamaliel I was thoroughly trained in the
law of our fathers and was just as zealous for God
as any of you are today.
34. Acts 5:34, Gamaliel
• Adam Clarke's Commentary says, “[A Pharisee, named
Gamaliel, a doctor of the law] "This," says Dr. Lightfoot, "was
Rabban Gamaliel the first; commonly, by way of distinction,
called Rabban Gamaliel the elder. He was president of the
council after the death of his own father, Rabban Simeon, who
was the son of Hillel. He was Paul's master, and the 35 th
receiver of the traditions, and on this account might not be
improperly termed nomodidaskalos, a doctor of the law,
because he was one that kept and handed down the Cabala
received from Mount Sinai. He died eighteen years before the
destruction of Jerusalem, his son Simeon succeeding him in the
chair, who perished in the ruins of the city." Though probably
no favourer of Christianity, yet, for a Pharisee, he seems to
have possessed a more liberal mind than most of his brethren;
the following advice was at once humane, sensible, candid,
and enlightened.
35. Acts 5:38, God Is Sovereign
• NAU Acts 5:38 "So in the present case, I say to
you, stay away from these men and let them
alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will
be overthrown; 39 but if it is of God, you will
not be able to overthrow them; or else you
may even be found fighting against God.“
• God is sovereign regardless of men’s plans and
actions.
• God is sovereign over every “if/then”.
36. Acts 5:41, Rejoicing, Worthy Of Suffering
• Acts 5:41…rejoicing because they had been
counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the
Name.
• Woe! Do you “rejoice” when you suffer?
• I sure don’t.
• We should, it’s Father filtered. Romans 8:28 is
still in the Bible.
37. Science Question
• A goober was playing Trivial Pursuit one
night. It was her turn.
• She rolled the dice and she landed on "Science
& Nature." Her question was, "If you are in a
vacuum and someone calls your name, can
you hear it?"
The goober thought for a time and then asked,
• "Is it turned on or off?"
