4. Wall Street
• Major financial centre of the U. S. and symbolizes the money
market and financiers of the U.S.
• Wall Street was called because of a wall which extended
along the street in Dutch times.
• Built about 1650 from the Hudson and the East River to
protect the small colony living south of this street from
attacks by Indians.
• Later the wall was removed, but the name remained.
6. The Metropolitan Museum of Arts
• One of the world's largest and most important art museums.
• The main building is located on the eastern edge of Central Park.
• The Met's permanent collection contains more than two million works of
art, divided into nineteen curatorial departments.
7. Statue of Liberty
• Stands on the Ellis island. It is a worldwide symbol of freedom and it is called ‘lady
liberty’.
• Designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886.
• The statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France.
• Is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom,
who bears a torch and a tablet evoking upon which is inscribed the date of the
American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
8. Times Square
• Is at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue.
• Has become a symbol of its home city. Times Square is
principally defined by its animated, digital advertisements.
• Named after the Times Building (now One Times Square),
where The New York Times was formerly headquartered.
9. St. Patrick's Cathedral
• The largest decorated Roman Catholic cathedral in
North America.
• One of the biggest tourist attractions in NYC,
constructed between 1858 and 1879.
10. New York Botanical Garden
• Is the oldest and largest botanical gardens in the world.
• One of the premier botanical gardens in the United States, located in the
Bronx.
• It spans some 250 acres (100 ha) of Bronx Park and is home to some of the
world's leading plant laboratories.
• It offers major exhibitions and flower shows throughout the year, drawing
over 800,000 visitors annually.
11. Central Park
• Large public park (3.41 km).
• With about twenty-five million visitors annually.
• The most visited city park in the United States, and its
appearance in many movies and television shows has made it
among the most famous city parks in the world.
12. WTC-World Trade Center
• Was a complex with seven buildings featuring landmark twin towers in
Lower Manhattan.
• Twin towers were destroyed in 2001 during the September 11 terrorist
attacks.
• The site is currently being rebuilt with five new skyscrapers and a
memorial to the casualties of the attacks.
14. Empire State Building
• It rises to 381 m at the 102nd floor, and its full structural
height (including broadcast antenna) reaches 443 m.
• The building has 85 stories of commercial and office space
and an indoor and outdoor observation deck on the 86th
floor.
15. Rockefeller Center
• Is "a city within a city“.
• It is the largest private building project ever undertaken in modern times It
is a complex of 19 commercial buildings with its own restaurants, stores,
theatres, post--offices.
• In winter its plaza is transformed from an outdoor restaurant to an ice-
skating pond Radio City Music Hall.
16. Madison Square Garden
• Has been the name of four arenas in New York City.
• It is also the name of the entity which owns the arena and several of the
professional sports franchises which play there.
• It is the largest indoor stadium in the city, home of all kinds of sports,
public events and elaborate entertainments.
17. Brooklyn Bridge
• Is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States,
stretches 1825 m over the East River connecting the
Manhattan and Brooklyn.
• it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the first
steel-wire suspension bridge.
18. Museum of Natural History
• One of the largest and most celebrated museums in the
world.
• The Museum boasts habitat groups of African, Asian and
North American mammals.
• Most of the Museum's collections of mammalian and
dinosaur fossils
19. Broadway Theatre
• The city's 39 largest theatres are collectively known as "Broadway”.
• Broadway theatre is the most prestigious form of professional theatre in
the U.S., as well as the most well known to the general public and most
lucrative for the performers, technicians and others involved in putting on
the shows.
20. City Hall
• The seat of the government of New York City.
• The building houses the office of the Mayor of New York City and the
chambers of the New York City Council.
• The building is the oldest City Hall in the United States that still houses its
original governmental functions.
21. Major League Baseball
• Baseball has been always popular in New York.
• The city's two current Major League Baseball teams
are the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
