2. The LUSTAU BODEGAS were founded in 1896 by Mr. José Ruíz Berdejo
who was a judicial clerk. He had his own vineyard and privately
produced wines which he sold to local wineries. His son-in-law, Emilio
Lustau devoted himself entirely to winemaking and ten years later he
was awarded the official status of Sherry Exporter.
The Lustau Bodegas produce wines in the three cities which make up
the Sherry triangle: Jerez, El Puerto de Santa María, and Sanlúcar de
Barrameda. It is the only sherry wine producer which still selects
“almacenista” wines originating from these three cities. This permits
it to market more than thirty different types of high quality sherries,
many of which are considered to be true oenological gems.
Discover Sherry Club visited the Bodegas in July of 2013. It was a
wonderful experience and our host, Federico Sánchez-Pece, shared with
us many of his fascinating memories relating to the Bodegas. He
masterfully led us through the magical places were the Bodegas´ sherry
wines spend many years in semi-darkness and absolute silence, slowly
turning into the unique wines that they are.

The visit was wonderful. No matter how many times I have
gone to Sherry bodegas they never cease to amaze me. It is
like walking into another world. It is truly mysterious, dark, very
quiet, and still. You breathe the aroma and are taken aback
because of its uniqueness. When you think that many of those
wines have been there well over a hundred years it’s awesome.

I chose the “Sound of Silence” from Simon & Garfunkel for this
power point. I think it is a great song for this great Lustau
Bodega.
Sit back and enjoy the visit and great music.
