2. Title
Impact of Climate Change on Household Food Security of Nawalparasi: A Case Study
Background:
In Nepal, majority of the population are small land holding farmers where almost 80 percent
reside in rural areas, 65 percent are involved in agriculture contributing 33 percent to the GDP
(NARC, 2010).
Climate change is a phenomenon due to emissions of greenhouse gases from fuel combustion,
deforestation, urbanization and industrialization resulting variations in solar energy, temperature
and precipitation (Upreti, 1999) .
The relationship between climate change and agriculture is two-way; agriculture contributes to
climate change in several major ways and climate change in general adversely affects agriculture.
Food security is the state achieved when food systems operate such that “all people, at all times,
have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary
needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life” (FAO).
3. Rationale
In Nawalparasi (27°40'00'' to 84°11'15''):
Farmers follow traditional agricultural patterns, relying on rainwater and seasons.
Temperature has increased from the last 10 years.
The annual mean temperature trend 0.02 to 0.08° C in western over national trend -0.04 to 0.06° C.
Similarly, rainfall has decreased from the past four years.
The annual mean precipitation trend -30 to 40 mm in the western over national trend -40 to 40 mm
(Practical Action, 2009).
Once the climate is disturbed, the whole agriculture system is affected
Climate Change
Food, Feed, Fiber & Fuel
Food Insecurity
Out of 26 million populations more than 2 million faced food insecurity in Nepal (IAASTD, 2008)
4. Objectives
General Objective:
To study the impact of Climate Change on Household Food Security
Specific objectives:
To explore the exiting agricultural farming system
To analyze effects of climate change on agricultural productivity
To determine the problems, attitudes and people’s participation over
livelihoods
To explore economic potential adaptative measures to cope with
changing climate on agriculture
5. Methodology
Base line Survey then followed by
Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools such as
Focus Group Discussion (FGD)
Historic timelines
Seasonal calendars
Key informant survey
Transact walk
The study sites will be selected based on climate data of
Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM)
representing high trends of temperature and precipitation.
Data analysis will be carried out using SPSS statistical tools.
6. Expected Results and Conclusion
Climate change is real and underway, so there is a need of impact
identification and adoption to cope with vulnerabilities in
agricultural sector and their livelihoods.
This study will enhance to analyze effects of climate change on
agricultural productivity of Nawalparasi exploring alternative
economic potential measures to cope from farmers level.
This study will also elaborates the more attention of other
researchers, governmental offices and different other related
organizations to design and implement suitable agro-ecological
projects and programs.
