2. From 1699-1780, Williamsburg was the capital
of Virginia and the largest American colony.

3. By 1770, about 2,000 people lived in Williamsburg.
Some were government workers and lawyers. Many
were carpenters and cabinet makers, while others
worked in shops and taverns.

4. About half of the people in Williamsburg were
African Americans. Most of them were slaves
and worked on plantations and farms.
