TRANSIT
So are we connected yet?
??
by Katherine Sullivan
When your waiting on the platform do often think to yourself. When will the
train get here? Living in New York I have discovered almost every corner of this great
city via the subway or occasional bus. I have also discovered that attempting to get
from one end to the other on the weekends or at night is a rediculous challenge and
border line torcher
I am like everyone else I love my subway line. The F has yet to fall me yet. But there are
far to many lines out there that move the speed of mud and often leave their
passangers oatinig forever in a purpetual state of miss trust. The worst has yet to
come, if your not sure where your going, your might as well curl up in a corner and
begin a long life as a sub-human. If your one of the lucky few who get on the train its
garunteed to smell like urine, old Starbucks,or some other luquid thats found its way
to the oor.
So why is it that London has the oldest subway system in the world and it runs ve
time faster, cleaner and more e ciently than the oldest system in the US? Plane and
simple politics are the largest contributor to point the nger at. If the system runs it
makes money, if people have to use it then it will always be running. Unfortunatly it
don't have to run e cently, it just has run.
In the next ten years the MTA and NJT is going to spend an excess of billions
re-working mass transit systems, and commuter lines. Building transit hubs, new
tunnels, but not a new train or sensible time table is in sight. Maybe some of these
allocated funds should be focused on the parts of the system that fail now. We are
paying for the service shouldn't the people who use it have some say in how runs?
