inland forest that skirted
lakes Ontario and Erie.
Most lived close or in the
state of New York. Where
some lived there were
mountain and woods. The
climate where they lived was
hot and dry in the summer
and cold and wet in the
winter. For the Iroquois their
growing season was in the
spring, and the weather
affected it sometimes.

• Mostly the Iroquois ate
corn, squash, and beans.
Iroquois people hunted,
gathered, and farmed for
food. Their food did
differ according to
seasons because, when
their usual food was
scarce they would eat
other foods that were
available.
4. Clothing
The Iroquois usually wore
clothes made of deerskin or
buffalo skin. The Iroquois
women wore skirts, vests,
and moccasins. The Iroquois
men wore breech cloths,
leggings, tunics, and
moccasins. Their clothes did
differ according to season
because, in the summer they
would wear thinner clothing
and in the winter they would
wear thicker clothing.

• The Iroquois lived in long
houses, they were made elm
bark if available. The
Iroquois were farming people
that lived in permanent
homes. Their dwellings did
not depend on the season
because, they lived in long
houses all year round.
6. Interesting Facts
Interesting facts are, the Iroquois
invented a game called Lacrosse.
The Iroquois called their
confederacy, Kanonsionni which
means people of the long house. The
Iroquois made mask carvings and
porcupine quill work. The Iroquois
had dream ceremonies and believed
dreams were the guide to their lives.
