This will help you focus on what’s important to you (and hopefully keep you from getting distracted and sidetracked). Keywords: industry-related terms and phrases Competitors: You know who they are (this may not be applicable to sole proprietors) Associations: Sole proprietors might use this rather than competitors Expectations: What do you think people are talking about that you’d find interesting? Hopes: Ideally, what would you like to hear people talking about?

Basic functions are pretty easy to learn and somewhat intuitive (e.g., boxes labeled “search”). But don’t stop at the basics. Click around. Discover things. Try things out. Browsing is fine – but only for a short time. Take a strategic approach. Start with the your list of keywords, competitors, associations, expectations and hope. Some metrics you might find interesting: Use the metrics I tracked in the HISC report as an example.
