We can do that today. For example, the Office desktop application like Word allow people to individual collaborate. Track changes is a great example.
One might then submit the document back to the original author and your user experience might look like this. In this case I see some email with some attachments. But I also have individual calendar. I also have individual contacts. All of this is done without SharePoint
One area that SharePoint helps facilitate Individual collaboration is Profiles whereby each individual gets a site, referred to as a My Site. This is a improvement upon the personal file folder IT provisions on a file share.
