Design Out Crime
The UK spends £2.7 billion each
year as a direct result of alcohol
related glass injuries.

To tackle the problem the
Design Council and the Home Office
launched the ‘Design Out Crime’
initiative: ‘Using design to reduce
injuries from alcohol related violence
in pubs and clubs.’

The challenge
In 2009 the Design Council commissioned Design Bridge
to develop a safer pint glass for the 21st century.

Whilst creating a safer pint glass, our challenge was also
to enhance the consumer and brand experience and
improve efficiencies for the brand owner and licensee.

What’s out there now?
Three basic options:

1. Annealed glass

2. Toughened glass:
the current industry standard but twice the price of annealed glass


3. Plastic (polycarbonate):
lots of practical benefits, but with a fundamental look and feel that people are very negative about

Where we started
All our experience was around existing technology and our previous glassware designs.

The Innovation RCA (Royal College of Art) had collated a wealth of research in its
SWIG (safer ways in glass) research report. This gave us a flying start in terms
of the technology advances as well as people's attitudes and behaviours.

Why glass?
•    Look, touch, embossed, cool – glass delivers
     the whole sensorial experience

•    There is such a resistance to plastic that
     whatever you do with it, it will be a compromise

Who are we designing for?
Consumers: want a glass that feels good, looks good,
keeps their drink at the right temperature, doesn't fall
over and gives a nice 'clink' when they say "cheers".
Trade: pub landlords, bar owners and bar staff want a
glass doesn't cost a fortune, lasts a long time, performs
in a dishwasher, doesn't make the beer too frothy and
can be stacked if needs be.
Brands: want to be able to customise to suit their
image: distinctive shapes, different logos embossed
and printed...maybe some new, innovative features.


All this, as well as our most important start point:
a safer glass for everyone.

  • 6. The challenge In 2009 the Design Council commissioned Design Bridge to develop a safer pint glass for the 21st century. Whilst creating a safer pint glass, our challenge was also to enhance the consumer and brand experience and improve efficiencies for the brand owner and licensee.   • 8. Where we started All our experience was around existing technology and our previous glassware designs. The Innovation RCA (Royal College of Art) had collated a wealth of research in its SWIG (safer ways in glass) research report. This gave us a flying start in terms of the technology advances as well as people's attitudes and behaviours. Brands: want to be able to customise to suit their image: distinctive shapes, different logos embossed and printed...maybe some new, innovative features.
