- Hello, my name is Dennis Miles, and I am a librarian at the Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Today I am going to show you how to do legal research. At first it may seem overwhelming, but as you learn how legal resources are organized, you will gain the knowledge on how to do your own research using legal resources.
- There are seven parts to this discussion, and you are about to enter part 1, the overview section.
- There is a research guide for Public School Law available on the Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library’s webpage. This guide contains information that you need to know to conduct research in Law. You will go to the SE Library main page at: http://www.se.edu/lib Then click on the Research Guides link Then scroll down until you find Public School Law
- If you want to use this PowerPoint, you need to Go to the library webpage at: http://www.se.edu/lib Click on Research Guides Click on Public School Law Then click on Tab 24, Tutorials. There you will find all seven powerpoints.
- This is an outline of what will be covered in these slides. - Where do you go to find the law? Where do you go to understand the law? We will discuss where the actual law is We will also discuss tool that may help us to understand the law
- We will talk about two different kinds of resources: Primary vs secondary sources Primary source (authority)-court opinions, statutes, constitutions, administrative law Secondary source (authority)—commentary and analysis on the law
- We will also discuss print sources and the new electronic resources Understanding how print resources are organized can be helpful to you even if you conduct the majority of your research electronically.
