This document summarizes the goals and activities of the OpenMissouri project, which aims to connect Missourians with public data from state and local government agencies. The project serves to inform citizens about available data, inspire its use, and educate about how to access and use public data. It catalogs over 250 datasets from 20 state agencies on its website. The site was built using open-source technologies and aims to expand its coverage to include more cities and counties as well as different data formats.

We know that platforms are increasingly integral to at least a small part of almost everything almost everybody does almost everywhere, including many parts of political communication processes, from the production of content, over its distribution, to its consumption, to the actions that follows next. Simply put, if we don’t study platforms, we are studying the past, not the present and future of political communication. Our field brings much to this with its emphasis on both short-term individual-level attitudinal and behavioral effects and the study of longer-term institutional implications. To pursue these research opportunities we have to (1) handle challenges of methods and access to data, (2) the fact that political communication is a small part of very, very large platforms, and (3) get beyond our comfort zone and read more scholarship from outside political communication.

presented at the 2011 SemTech Open government data and related services/applications are quickly growing on the Web. Although most agree that the government data has great potential in solving real world problems, there are still many challenges that must be addressed. This talk will describe several representative domain applications and provide concrete examples of evolving technical challenges remaining. We will show solution paths that have proven useful and make recommendations on the corresponding Semantic Web best practices. • Scalability. How can we handle(e.g. search and cleanse) the 3,000+ raw/tool datasets, and the additional 300,000+ geo datasets from data.gov? • Interoperability. Multi-scale open government data came from city governments, state governments, and national governments. How can one compare the GDP of the US and China, and later link to state-level financial data? Open government data covers many domains. How can one associate open government data with domain knowledge to build a cancer prevention application? • Provenance and quality. How should provenance be leveraged to facilitate high-quality data management interactions (e.g. reuse, mash-up and feedback) between the government and the public?

Open Government systems are changing the way that many governments around the world interact with their citizenry. Transparency and innovation are both enhanced by government openness and especially by government data sharing. Further, the linked data approach, using maturing semantic web technologies, has been shown to be very valuable in creating "mashups" in which government datasets can be combined in new and innovative ways, and turned into "live" infographics. In this talk, presented to the computer science department at PUC-RIO, we describe the research aspects of RPI's ongoing work in this area.

Open data portals have been a primary source for publishing datasets from various sectors of administration, all over the world. However, making open data available does not necessarily lead to better utilisation from citizens and businesses. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
