“In software, Red Hat and Salesforce.com showed strengthened results with VMware and Citrix remaining top of mind, which Goldman believes to be a good indication of internal and external cloud deployments gaining momentum.“
VMware’s mission is perfectly aligned with that of its customers. VMware has set out to simplify the complexity that bogs down IT, which in turn will dramatically lower operational costs, while at the same time enabling agile service delivery to better support the goals of the business. The mission is simply stated, but backed my millions of advanced engineering hours, ushering in a new era of IT.
It’s no surprise that cloud computing has jumped in terms of CIO priorities. With the availability of a pubic rate card combined with a self-service, instant delivery model for IT infrastructure, every CIO must determine their strategy to leverage cloud computing. There’s also no surprise that virtualization is the top priority. After all, the first step to transitioning to a cloud architecture is the virtualization of the datacenter.
That new era is characterized by the promise of cloud computing. The “Web” completely changed the way we think about consuming services over the internet. But that was only half of the picture. The other half is how those services are delivered. That’s the focus of cloud computing, which completes the transformation of service delivery. VMware, the customer-proven leader in virtualization, is aggressively helping businesses pave the path to “Cloud Computing”, which promises to be the new era in IT that finally addresses the compounding problem of complexity.
HighlightsWhen we talk about savings, we break it up into 3 categories of energy – financial, human, and the earth’s. These savings are what begin to break down the amount of IT energy spent on maintenance, and freeing up budget and resources for innovation. ScriptThe most obvious benefit of virtualization is in the realm of savings. Most people immediately equate virtualization with capex savings that result from server consolidation. But the fact is that a broader virtualization strategy, as defined by Business Infrastructure Virtualization, leads to much more than simply saving on server costs. To quote Gartner: “Organizations are looking at ways to cut costs, better utilize assets, and reduce implementation and management time and complexity. Virtualization addresses all of these concerns.”Hit ENTER for Build
The way we like to think about this is Saving Energy. In fact, we break this down into 3 categories of energy – financial, human, and the earth’s.
The first category, Financial Energy, is what attracts most people to virtualization in the beginning – cost savings. For example, our customers have seen on average a 50 to 60 percent cost reduction in server hardware when leveraging VMware technology for server consolidation. The VMware vSphere™ 4 virtualization platform supports the highest consolidation ratios in the industry, with throughput and performance capabilities that now can match physical environments in most situations. This is why VMware customers are able to achieve such high capex savings.Of even bigger impact for some is the ability to delay costly datacenter expansion, because of the reclaimed floor space, power and cooling as a result of these consolidation efforts. In addition, a virtualized environment is easier to manage, and enables significantly more automation of mundane management tasks. This results in the majority of customers also experiencing at least a 25% reduction in operational costs. The net result is that your dollars stretch further, which means you can get significantly more done with less costs.
The second category is Human Energy, and this is all about shifting the energy away from managing hardware, to spending time on business needs. A study of our highly virtualized customer base, showed that on average these customers were spending one-third less time on routine administrative tasks in IT operations due to virtualization and the automation achieved with it. Imagine, that’s a third of your day, everyday, in return energy.
And finally, the Earth’s Energy. I think we’re all incented to use less energy, and use it wisely. Virtualization in the datacenter has shown the ability to save up to 80% in energy costs. This isn’t just achieved through server consolidation. By leveraging a virtualization platform across the datacenter, we’re able to apply Distributed Power Management, a capability unique to VMware vSphere, to automatically migrate applications to fewer servers during non-peak hours, shutting down machines and unused infrastructure, saving real energy – and of course dollars.
The result of all of these savings, is now we can apply that energy to the business. This is the end goal. Energizing the business through IT. Spending more on innovation, and a lot less on maintaining the status quo!
HighlightsThe promise of Systems Management has always been about raising the level of management to the SLA / policy level. It has never been achieved, because it is impossible in a physical environment. Virtualization is the key to this promise becoming a reality. ScriptVirtual Management is the key to achieving the full benefits of virtualization, and dramatically shifting Human energy. The systems management industry has always held the goal of raising management to the policy level, whereby IT manages SLAs, not the underlying component infrastructure. This goal has always been illusive, until now. Hit ENTER for BuildWith virtualized resources being managed by the platform, and a management solution – VMware vCenter™ Server – built specifically for virtualized environments, IT can finally manage based on policies and SLAs, and let the platform manage the components. VMware vCenter Server is built around smart policies – policy and metadata pertaining to that policy built into the virtual configurations. This enables further automation, and simplification of deployments and operations. In addition to day-to-day management, the environment is set-up to put in place robust Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery operations, ensuring that the IT is ALWAYS on. Hit ENTER for BuildAt this stage, IT has essentially moved to “cloud” computing within its own environment. We refer to this as creating an “internal cloud”.
Zones enabling a network security management model for the cloud computing.Network security setting / zones stay with a VM, even after a Vmotion.
Finally, vSphere delivers the most comprehensive set of availability capabilities during planned and unplanned downtime events.
ScriptBut don’t stop at the four walls of the datacenter. There is just as much benefit to bringing your desktops into this strategy as well.Hit ENTER for BuildLeveraging VMware View™, to extend the VMware vSphere platform, you can break the desktops free of the devices as well. For users, this means always available, always accessible information and applications. I never have to worry about my desktop, or my personal information, being lost or unavailable. For IT operations, this means significantly less headaches in desktop configuration, as well as patching and upgrading. Imagine how much more efficient your organization will be at deploying Windows 7 if you are centralized and virtualized? And since we’re talking about Windows, let’s talk about security and control. Better to put it back in the hands of IT, than in the hands of the end users. Desktop Virtualization is as important to energizing the business, as datacenter virtualization. But again, it’s all done on a common platform – not in name, but in reality!
HighlightsThe first step to cloud computing is to do more of what they probably already are doing – virtualization.ScriptThe first step is to virtualize. Not just some IT services, but all of your supporting application infrastructure. Hit ENTER for BuildThe closer you get to 100%, the closer you get to achieving the benefits of “cloud” computing. This is why we provide a complete virtualization platform, to cover your Windows and Linux applications, and all the dependent infrastructure. The goal is simply to free up the applications from the underlying hardware and infrastructure, enabling a truly dynamic and flexible application environment, which in turn is going to significantly increase IT agility.
HighlightsVMware vSphere is the common platform that bridges your internal cloud, with publicly available external cloud services, from the biggest cloud service providers in the industry. More freedom, more choice, more options. All because of our platform.Note that even Microsoft cannot make this claim. Hyper-V in Windows is a different virtualization technology than what is used in their cloud – Azure. Two different organizations built different virtualization technologies for their offerings. They may claim compatibility, but with a common platform on both sides, we can guarantee it. ScriptNow that we’ve achieved these benefits inside the datacenter, what if you want to take advantage of an external cloud? Should this represent a separate effort? Hit ENTER for BuildAbsolutely not. In fact, the same VMware vSphere platform that powers your internal datacenter, that back-ends your desktop virtualization strategy, is also being used by cloud service providers to build out compatible cloud infrastructures. 10 out of the Top 10 cloud service providers in the world are “virtualized by VMware”. Why? First off, because vSphere is the industry’s most trusted virtualization platform. Secondly, because they realize the value of having a common virtualization substrate between enterprise IT datacenters, and their offerings. It’s what will create the compatible bridge between the two. Hit ENTER for BuildThis compatible approach will enable the choice of taking a virtualized application, and dynamically moving it to the external cloud if desired. For example, if additional compute capacity is required for a seasonal spike, then IT has the ability to move the application workload to an external cloud service, paying only for what they use for as long as they use it, and then move the application back in-house during non-peak seasons. The advantage to the business is not having to pay for carrying additional datacenter capacity only used a portion of the time. Hit ENTER for BuildThis model, bridging the Datacenter or Internal “cloud”, with an external “cloud”, is what we refer to as a Virtual Private Cloud. Not unlike Virtual Private Networks, that span both internal and external network resources, yet are fully controlled by IT, a Virtual Private Cloud provides all the benefits of “cloud” computing, in a seamless infrastructure environment. In summary, a private cloud bridges the benefits of the datacenter – trust, control, reliability, and security, with the benefits of the “cloud” – flexibility, efficiency, and scalability. The resources are there when you need them, if you need them. Only VMware provides a compatible bridge between internal and external “clouds”, giving IT the full flexibility and choice of a private cloud. By virtualizing with VMware, you are already on the path to “cloud” computing.

*The overwhelming majority of vSphere customers have less than workloads which means that theoretically they can run their entire datacenter on a single vSphere cluster. NOTE - vCenter Server MUST be hosted on 64-bit Windows OS
