12. Past Winners 2009 First Prize: £15,000 Snap Fashion Jennifer Griffiths, (Undergraduate, Computer Science) Snap Fashion is an online search facility that allows you to find similar fashion items by simply uploading an image. It can be described as a sophisticated price comparison website for clothing. A user will visit the Snap Fashion website and upload an image of an item of clothing that they have found, be it a top from Harvey Nicols, or a dress worn by Cheryl Cole. Snap Fashion will then apply image processing algorithms to the image in order to return similar items from the Snap Fashion database within a matter of seconds. The user will be presented with lists of similar items, both in clothing style and in pattern.
13. Past Winners 2009 Joint Second Prize: £10,000 Shamba Technologies Edward Matos (Undergraduate, Department of Engineering Mathematics) Shamba Technologies have developed a social enterprise that will disseminate bio-digester technology amongst the rural poor of developing countries. There are 2.6 billion people around the world who collect firewood every day as fuel for cooking and heating. In Africa alone, more than 400,000 people, mostly children, die every year from acute respiratory infections caused by inhaling smoke in the home. The bio-digester technology will capture fuel from the bacteriological digestion of livestock excrement and has the potential to replace firewood as rural Africa's fuel of choice.
14. Past Winners 2008 Second Prize: £10,000 DocCom Solutions Dr Jonathan Bloor & Dr Jonathon Shaw (Staff, UBHT) DocCom was founded in July 2007 by two doctors to provide web delivered communication systems for medical staff in the healthcare sector. Their application, DocCom PORTAL can save hospitals hundreds of thousands of pounds per year and at the same time, improve patient care. Compelling market research has shown that 90% of Medical Directors of Acute NHS Trusts cannot communicate effectively with their Doctors. This is due to the mobile nature of this workforce and the complicated structure of the NHS. DocCom PORTAL enables NHS organisations to manage and track the communication of critical information. The application also creates a professional network for medical staff within and across NHS organisations so they can communicate effectively. The company has an NHS Trust as a minority shareholder and their first NHS contract.
