Yes, but….
 I’m afraid to give speeches.
 There are many roles to be played in a meeting,
speaker is but one. Dip your toe in the water by
participating as a timer, grammarian, or table topics
participant.
 You don’t have to give a speech until you’re ready.
 Your Mentor will work with you.
Yes, but…
 I don’t like evaluating people or being
evaluated.
 I don’t like being evaluated on something that
I know I’m not good at.
 The evaluation process provides only constructive feedback.
 Listening to analyze or evaluate is a skill that most of us need
to practice.
 You will get more comfortable with receiving and giving
evaluations once you start practicing that skill.
 The only way to get better at something is to practice!
Yes, but…
Other speakers in the club don’t seem
to be as skilled as I am, so what can I
gain by joining?
 Toastmasters improves your listening skills and your
ability to handle one-on-one conversations.
 Leadership opportunities.
 You also extend your personal network by meeting
new people.

Notas do Editor

  1. Toastmasters was rebranded a couple of years ago. While people that know Toastmasters know it for public speaking, the rebranding showcases the leadership development that has always been there but that has not been so well known.
  2. The educational system within Toastmasters has the better known Communication as well as Leadership tracks
  3. Within the first speech manual, members work on a series of 10 projects or speeches that focus on the basics of public speecking with each project having a different focus.
  4. After completing the first manual and becoming a “Competent Communicator”, members can select from a wide variety of advanced manuals. Each manaul has 5 projects or speeches and the theme include Storytelling, Public Relations, Speaking to Inform, Persuasive Speaking, Technical Presentations, and many more. So it is easy to find a theme that you’d like to work on or develop your skills further.
  5. Within the Competent Leader manual members get credit for taking on roles at club meetings and about 70% of the projects can be completed just by attending meetings and taking on roles. The remaining projects include things like mentoring a new member through their first three speeches and taking part in campaigns or special projects within the club, area, division, or district.
  6. While there are a lot of DTMs within Toastmasters with many new one achieved every year, the majority of members don‘t achieve this award. Wiithin Word Weavera we have one member that has already achieved DTM and two more that should be achieving this in the coming weeks.
  7. Now that you‘ve seen the Communication and Leadership Tracks, you have a better understanding of this picture.
  8. This is Toastmaster view of the world as of July 2011.
  9. In the 2014-15 Toastmaster year, D71 and D59 will be spliting from 2 to 4 districts. This year D59 is being divided into a Northeast and Southwest, with a few key district oficers having two people in preparation for the official split next year.
  10. Members are the focus of most everything that is done at Toastmasters. Members make up Clubs, Clubs make up Areas, Areas form Divisions, Divisions form Districts, and Districts then form Regions.
  11. The World Champion of Public Speaking is determined at the International Convention. Each holds a club contest where the winners advance through series of contests that lead to the Annual Convention usually held in the Summer. There is also a series of contests in the Fall, but this ends at the District level. Next year the Annual Convention is being held in Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend attending the District 59 Fall Conference being held in Budapest, as it will be one of the last opportunities to meet with Toastmasters from Contental Europe.
  12. When asked why people joined Toastmasters surveys tend to show these reasons why people join Toastmasters.
  13. Toastmasters provides many opportunities for members to mentor and to be mentored. You can use your mentoring experiences in other parts of your life (professionally and in other organizations that you belong to).
  14. Ultimately the number speeches and frequency that you give them is totally up to you, but you have a friendly environment where people want to see you improve and succeed.
