Are we done?
• I can get a DOI for my software by putting it in
GitHub, creating a release, and filling out a page
on Zenodo.
• Now I just tell people to cite my DOI, right?
3. www.ci.anl.gov
www.ci.uchicago.edu
3
Like arXiv?
• I put some text on arXiv.org, and I got a URL
• But this URL isn’t quite the same a paper’s DOI
• It’s not indexed like a paper
– Google scholar, yes; Scopus & WoS, no
• Is it curated/reviewed?
– Curated, yes
4. www.ci.anl.gov
www.ci.uchicago.edu

Like figshare?
• I put some text on figshare.com, and I got a DOI
• But this DOI isn’t quite the same a paper’s DOI
• It’s not indexed like a paper
– Google scholar, Scopus & WoS, no
• Is it curated/reviewed?
– Curated, yes
5. www.ci.anl.gov
www.ci.uchicago.edu

Why is indexing important?
• In the web, pages that are not crawled by
indexers do not appear in search results
• In research, products that are not indexed don’t
have citations tracked
– Contributors don’t get credit for them, e.g. h-index
– Can’t see full credit network if nodes are missing

What else do we need for software?
1. Consistent and standardized metadata
– Work underway by Jones et al.
2. Consistent curation and review processes
– What is needed to review and “vouch for” software?
– Who will do it? Journals? Domain communities?
Institutions?
3. Work with indexers
– Can talk to Scopus and WoS about creating software objects
and tracking citations
– Scholar behind the Google Curtain
o Do we need an open community indexer?
